If you were a Fake Fender Blade Runner, what questions would you ask a Fender, in order to determain whether or not it was a real Fender, a Fake Fender, or a fake Fake Fender? (Just throwing that out there.)

The truss rod access on the back of the headstock would give most real Fender fakes away.

While I realize this is a humor thread, wasn't Fender Japan basically this exact idea?

1970s: "Hey, those guys in Japan are cutting into our sales with their Fender copies! I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em: cut a deal for them to make actual branded Fenders in their factories and we now a get a cut on all those 'fake' Fenders."

2015: "Hey, Fender Japan makes better instruments then Fender USA. Can't allow that! Kill it now!"

It is ironic, that given the fact that Japanese electronics, cars and musical instruments were once somewhat reviled, they are held in much higher esteem nowadays. Japanese Fenders have a cult following, and I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a part of that cult. I suppose this humor thread has morphed into an irony thread.

But the hipster in me would want a pickguard made from the shell of a real tortoise. Just to be ironic.

If you would want a realLY fake Fender, then go to www dot aliexpress dot com and search for jazz or precision bass. You will find a wealth of fake. Even some that look inspired. These Chinese guys really take the idea of fake to the next level.

I was a teenager back in the 70s. Apex Music (now defunct) here in San Diego sold brand new Fenders for $350-400, depending on the finish. Mostly Strats, P Basses. Occasionally Teles and J Basses. Natural Ash finishes were really common for a while.
Some company, and I don't know who (because they never put their name on the headstock) made fake Fenders using the UGLIEST wood I've ever seen.. The necks weren't one piece maple; there was an additional piece of wood glued onto the headstock. YECH! As much as I wanted a Fender, even a fake Fender, I never wanted one THAT bad!!
