I can think of Newstead and Mike Dirnt for starters.

John Paul Jones used a pick in the studio. Bill Wyman also used a pick...

Really? That's interesting. I read an article years ago where he slammed Chris Squire for using a pick and said he wasn't a real bass player. As Squire was my "God" at that time(19 years old) I never listened to another thing with Berlin. He's a great player, but I don't like his attitude.

The thing about Berlin is that he was born without a tact filter. He talks straight out of his ass. He's a monster player, but his tendency to spout babel has kept me from digging him a lot more than I would otherwise.

Bobby Vega. There was a Bass Player article a few years ago about how he subbed for Rocco in Tower of Power, playing those parts with a pick.

I always forget about Bobby Vega when these pick-lists come up! Great tone, taste, and groove one of my favorites.

and supposedly Flea first started using a pick cause he and John Frusciante had a Joy Division cover band post-Californication, and lord knows you cant play Joy Division with your fingers and make it sound right. He said it opened up a whole new world of possibilities for him.

and i also remember hearing that Phil Lesh, back in the early 70s, had some felt-coated picks he would use, giving it a softer sounding attack. sounds interesting...

As far as Flea goes, he was using a pick before Californication on some songs. The Californication album has two that he uses picks on, Parallel Universe, and another one with a title I dont remember.

And could Phil Lesh have been using Nylon picks? Thats what I use when I'm forced to use a pick, because they have that soft attack, and have a 'give' thats closer to my fingers.

I do know a Dutch bassist, Joost van Haaren, he's the bassist of Krezip. He uses a blue pick, and when he doesn't need it, he just hold 'em in his mouth...

Juan Alderte (RacerX, Mars Volta)has said he used a pick, but I've never seen him use one. He's fast as hell with his fingers anyway so I don't see why he would need one.

Gidget Gein played with a pick. He recorded the first Marilyn Manson album, Portrait of an American Family.

Former Nine Inch Nails bassist Danny Lohner uses a pick.

Nick Oliveri from QOTSA uses a pick.

Have you ever met Jeff? Sure he's a brash New Yorker and quite outspoken, but if you put that in context with the topic of discussion, I found that he was pretty accurate in his comments.

And while I'm a die-hard rock player, Jeff's set was my favorite during the BX3 tour...it took quite a while to get my hyperextended jaw back into place afterwards.
