Farewell Draftsight. We hardly knew you.

So i got this email this morning:

They talk about freedom and call it a new era, but what they mean is, it's not free anymore.

Too bad. It's a great piece of software. I knew Dassault Systemes wasn't going to leave it free when they acquired it.

Kinda odd that I posted a Draftsight drawing on a future build at the same time you posted this

FYI, and AFAIK, Dassault developed Draft sight. I was a Solidworks Administrator for @150 seats at one time. I remember when they came out with it in the earlier 2000's. It was a complete ripoff of AutoCad LT. I will probably go out and find a version of AutoCad LT now

Hm. I thought they picked it up in an acquisition of a smaller company. Thanks for the correction.

It was years ago, and I'm a bit fuzzy, maybe they did, maybe they didn't develop it. It has been free for quite some time though since at least 2006 or 7. This was when Solidworks was really trying to get major market share, and the Autocad 2D market was ripe for the picking. They put Draftsight out there to compete with AutoCad 2d. If they got those clients, they hardsold the 3D stuff. This I am sure of.

So for them to say "customer research"...yeah i get it, I really want a 3D solution, but I want it FREE

I would really totally go for a free version of Solidworks 2010!

So I'm looking on the Dassault site....Can't find a price for the 2019 version
 
I've been wondering this, so I'll put this question here since it pertains to the subject somewhat:

My son ordered a 3D printer this week. A little background...my son is 17, and is hell bent on being an engineer. He is taking a class in HS and in there they do computer assisted drafting and design, and some board drafting, and also some 3D printing. He's a whiz at this stuff and loves it. So he saved his money from his job and bought a printer this week. I really cant see what he is going to use it for, but whatever. But then it got me thinking. What are some of the applications that I could use this in guitar building, beyond like knobs or pickup rings and such. Could something like this be used for cavity templates and similar items?

I've seen some of the 3D printed guitars out there...interesting, but I dont think I'd ever go that far.

As to the 3D printed organs, that actually doesnt sound too weird. As a kidney transplant recipient, I keep up with that tech, and the new thing is putting a small "dialysis" machine in you. I would think that would be something that could be printed by a machine.

DMLS is likely to influence guitars more than printing in plastic, allowing ‘affordable’ customisation of things like tuners, bridges and the like.

You can print in copper alloy nowadays, could be cool for fancy designs of nut rather than the traditional ‘rectangle with 4 slots’

I took a tour of SpaceX's rocket factory in Los Angeles, and they had a colossally expensive 3d printer that worked in stainless steel. They used it to make ultra-fine mesh filters.
 
From 04 to 06 I was a computer lab admin at an engineering school while also being an engineering student. We had moved from IronCAD to ProE to SolidWorks for 3D, but kept AutoCAD for 2D throughout that time. I had to learn bits and pieces of each but never took the time to really be an expert in any. Google Sketchup came out free a short time after and that became my go to for anything I needed when I no longer had access to school resources.

If I had either ProE or SolidWorks now in front of me I'd have no issue creating parts, but I have no idea what the industry uses now between the sldprt file and the machinery. Been out of the industry loop too long I guess. But my larger point is something new will be along shortly that will make you forget draftsight even existed. Or else it will become the One ring to rule them all. I'm definitely certain one of those two things could happen.

I hope he really likes math and physics, because engineering school doesn't revolve around prototyping and CAD modelling!
 
an increasing amount of engineering school is revolving around CAD modeling actually. Build a part, apply stresses, see the deformation, statistical analysis, report, presentation. Rinse and repeat, throughout a given course. Much cheaper to pay engineers to design parts, than pay engineers to design parts and machinists to make prototypes and lab techs to perform experiments and analysts to compile data.
 
I'm really sorry to hear this about DraftSight. Based on your recommendation, HammerHed, I had downloaded DraftSight in January, and had spent some time in February getting used to it. I've been using old versions of AutoCad LT since the 1990's for all my 2D drafting. Unfortunately, it only works on Windows XP. I only recently upgraded my main computer to Windows 7 (I like to use software that has a few years on it). So, I'd been doing my drafting on an older spare computer with XP.

I tried out DraftSight as a way to move my drafting onto a modern faster computer. I liked it; quite similar to AutoCad LT, and easy to transition to.

Bummer. I guess I'm going to have to abandon it and look for something else. I don't mind paying something for the software, but I want to buy it outright, not rent it. I may have to go with a slightly older version of TurboCad. Unless someone has another suggestion?
 
I can understand if they want to invest in new features and get paid for that. But making older versions of software cease to run in this way is not cool. Leave it as is and let those that need the upgrade pay for it - or have free and paid versions with different feature sets.
