Favorite american muscle car

This is the closest thing to classic muscle that you can find new in the showroom today. They are brutal in the same way that cars used to be, but they handle a hell of a lot better.
actually they're slower than a vette handle worse than other cars in the same price range and make hp from RPMs not torque.

It's pretty much the opposite of a muscle car.

2008 DODGE VIPER

For 2008, the Viper received a 90 hp (67 kW) bump up to 600 hp (450 kW), a 25 lb·ft (34 N·m) torque bump up to 560 lb·ft (759 N·m) and the engine displacement increased up to 8.4 liters (512 ci/8354 cc) from 8.3, also receiving better flowing heads with larger valves, Mechadyne variable valve timing on the exhaust cam lobes, and dual electronic throttle bodies.

2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 Version (regular Vette significantly slower)

The new Z06 arrived as a 2006 model in the third quarter of 2005. It has a 7.0 L (7,008 cc/427.6 in³) version of the small block engine codenamed LS7. Officially certified output is 505 hp (377 kW). Its performance is significantly better than the Ford Mustang and comparable to the Dodge Viper SRT-10. Official performance figures indicate that the Z06 can reach 60 mph (97 km/h) in just 3.8 seconds from a standing start in first gear, hitting 0 - 100 in about 7.8 - 8.2, with a quarter mile time of 11.7 and a top speed of 197 mph (electronically limited).






They are very close in performance with the Viper having a slight edge in speed and power although the Vette handles better (as you said). Enthusiasts pretty much agree that the Vette is better mannered while the Viper performs by simple brute force. I've driven an '04 Viper and, IMO, it is brutal.
 
My Grampa was kind of a 'Mopar farmer'. He would build up cars, sell them, and use the money to build up the next one. One time visiting the farm, I pointed and said "I want to buy THAT one when I get a drivers license." He said "I'll save it for you."

Unfortunately, while I was pointing at a '72 Challenger convertible, he apparently thought I meant a '67 'Cuda with the huge bubbleback window. So I had the bubbleback 'Cuda, but I wished for a Challenger convertible.

That 'Cuda was bizarrely fast, though. It came originally with a slant six 225. But Grampa had somehow stuffed in a 340 with a pair of 4 bbl's. He had done some kind of voodoo on the engine and suspension to make them MUCH more serious, but left the transmission alone. He said it didn't need any help.


I also won a Chevelle SS in a football pool once, but my parents would let me have it. They said (probably correctly) that I would kill myself in it. So the guy who had the correct halftime score got the car and I got money. Unfortunately I couldn't do anything fun with it. It payed for a semester of college. Useful, sure. But less fun that a Chevelle.

I've also driven a viper and even tho the gearing makes up for it the power is not found through low end torque :D.

also .1 looks like a driver's race in the quarter to me and the vette significantly takes it at road America :D

and for the price difference you can turbo or super the vette and the race would not even be close.

also when the ZR1 is released it will be closer to the Viper's price range and has a projected 11.2 quarter.
 
When I was a teen in the late 80's I bought a beat up '68 Mustang fastback with a 390 and a 4 speed. Fast in a straight line. Handled like a barge. Took forever to stop.

Oh yeah!! Good archive digging roberthelpus! My uncle had one of these--a most unique exhaust note. It had the liquid (alcohol?) injection to keep detonation down with the stock compression ratio and turbocharger combination. One horsepower per cubic inch was really something in those days. Unfortunately it had a very weak suspension and braking system--i.e. almost stock Olds F-85--and was NOT a performance car other than straight line acceleration. You needed "trigger quick" flailing arms to keep it under control, is more like it. Way too much power for the rest of the car. Hydramatic slushbox didn't help either.

The block and heads were aluminum, really progressive for the time, but I think they had cylinder wear problems and sold the patent to Rover. I believe the design is still used in the newest Morgan roadsters with that problem alleviated.

My Pops had a 64, which I think looks better than this one. I remember him saying something about bolts backing out of the aluminum block and heads and that you had to keep up with that. I was just a kid so I could be remembering wrong. One thing that I do remember is that it would stall in cold weather until it warmed up and the old man made an impressive shutter system that he could operate from the drivers seat out of aluminum. Nitro-methanol for the anti detonation. And yes it did get up and go.

Yes. Drums on all four corners.

Hauling that sucker down from over 100 MPH is an adventure unto itself. After about three seconds the brakes start to fade and you need to let off the pedal to let the heat leak away. Then you can apply for a few more seconds. Repeat two or three more times and you've succeded in stopping. :rollno:
