Favorite Gibson bass

I love Gibsons. For 20 years all I played was a late-70's Precision and could never quite get the sound in my head. Got a Gibson purely based on looks and was blown away by everything else. 2001 Thunderbird IV, 1975 Ripper fretless, 2012 NR Thunderbird, 2014 Midtown and 2007 Money Bass. The black TBird and the Midtown are my main players. The only mod I needed to make on these is replacing the bridge. I'll probably sell the Money bass as it's the only one that isn't amazing, to fund another Gibson purchase - looking at you, white TBird... And, no, I have never experienced neck dive.

One of my first gigs. Mid 1989. If you squint, you can see the Seymour Duncan BASS-800 head sitting on a squareback SVT cab. It was glorious.

Soundwise: Andy Fraser's EB-3, Trevor Bolder's EB-3L, John Wetton's Victory.

I was always partial to the Grabber. When I was in HS a friend had an old Grabber that he wanted to sell me for $350 (in 2000 or so) and I still regret it to this day when I see a nice one for sale for $1200 somewhere.

Nice Oliver! I have an older 502, horizontal trim and different grill cloth. That is if I ever get the head back from my amp guy!

There are a few I like - Victory Artist, RD Artist but the one I seem to dig the most is an old Ripper!

My first bass, which I still have and play, was a Grabber, which I bought new in 1983 for about $300. Still sounds really good and has always been a player. I lent it to a guy to play in his church band one time and it was almost a year before I got it back. (He violated at least one of the 10 commandments the way he coveted that bass, and I was worried he might break the one about stealing, but he finally did return it!) I played my first gigs on bass with it. When I see what those are going for now, I'm tempted to sell it, but I've made too many good memories with that bass so I'm keeping it for now.

The sliding single humbucker does change the tone, depending on where you have it. The Grabber is my best bass for reggae, and I play it with the 'bucker up in the neck position to lay down the deep, sweet riddims.

You must have not searched very hard......plenty of them without neck dive...

My favorite Gibson bass is the one that doesn’t neck dive. Haven’t found it yet.

I've had three Gibsons through the years. None had neck dive. '64 Gibson EB-0, '19 Gibson Les Paul Junior Tribute DC and '20 Gibson SG Standard.
