Roscoe.

First of all...tone, tone, and tone!

Secondly, and a close second at that, customer service at it's finest. A great group of people with a fantastic attention to detail in all things.

Oh, and the fact that each bass is playable fine art doesn't hurt either. ;)

There are a lot of great companies. It seems like your leaning to the vintage Fender-type so in that vein I'd say G&L.

Why?

Leo's last company, and they still do it the way he did it (as far as I know anyways).

There are plenty of other great companies though, and I'd happily play a Fender, Musicman, or a Rick (seems to be a bit different than the other 2).

i really like to see all your opinions, but i would have to vote for musicman. i mean i can honestly say i have never played a bass that literally has it all. its smooth, looks great, tone is amazing, hefty, and just all around an amazing instrument. ive owned one for a while now and i have never had to even bring it in for a set up. i set the thing up once ans that was it

I like 'em all (I have a Fender Geddy Lee, a MM Stingray and 2 Rics - a 4001 and a 4004Cii), but my favorite high quality bass manufacturer is Spector. I have 2 Spector Euro LX basses, and they are my go-to basses for live or recording work. For my style, no other bass is as comfortable, easy to play, or sounds as good to my ears. I would love to own a USA-made Spector NS2 someday, but the Euro neck-thru models work just fine for me for now...

Really? There are no high quality instruments coming out of any of those companies? Many a great players have made many a great songs on MusicMan, Rick, and Fender basses.

I knew a guy could play the sweetest blues you can imagine on a plywood harmony guitar. It went out of tune every 5 minutes and the pickups may as well been made with cat hair instead of copper wire...but...the way he played it could have made Stalin weep. It was still a crap guitar.

That said, those companies have been known to make good stuff. It's just the signal-to-noise ratio is a bit out of whack.
