Roscoe.

First of all...tone, tone, and tone!

Secondly, and a close second at that, customer service at it's finest. A great group of people with a fantastic attention to detail in all things.

Oh, and the fact that each bass is playable fine art doesn't hurt either. ;)

I've met Gard, had dinner and drinks with him and his (far better) half and also enjoyed a baseball game (with more drinks), crashed at his place for a few days, and toured the Roscoe shop. If I wasn't a Conklin fanboi, I'd absolutely own a Roscoe. Amazing basses, not stupid expensive compared to some loons who's names I won't mention, and great people. I didn't meet Keith, but I met a few other shop cats. All cool people.

My favorite is Rickenbacker, personally, but there are way more makers of high quality basses than that.

I mean, what about Lakland, or Sadowsky, or G&L? They're all based to some degree on Fenders themselves, but go interesting places with that inspiration. Then you've got Warwick, and Spector, and many others.

That's without even getting into the custom shops like Alembic and Ritter.

All 3 companies are great, but my favorite by a huge margin is Rickenbacker. I own 3,but have played quite a few to find the ones i preferred. As far as affordable big company basses go,Lakland would be my 2nd choice over Fender or Musicman.
