There are many great bass guitar companies making great basses. But I always said, if I end up playing a bass it's gonna be a Fender P bass. At 59 years old I just remember seeing P basses in cool old bands.
It's not just a Fender thing, because for guitar it's an ES335.

Fender by far the very best...
It's a matter of range of products, reliability, value for the price and... History
Then MusicMan
Again: a good range (not for so much time now) and overall perceiving quality
Then Rickenbacker
These basses Are authentically masterpieces: but no particular range available... How many among us can actually afford it? I certainly don't.
Then, to me, Yamaha. Value for the price and sound to go to. And plenty of evidently deep "cultural" influences by Fender...

Cheers,
Wallace

I like Desotos too (to look at), but I want the Ferrari when I drive. 'I'll be 59 this year. I just change with time.

I've owned good examples of all three bass companies mentioned in the OP and a bunch of other great basses, but my favorite bass builder is (obviously) Martin Keith...for service, tone, playability, and looks.

Ben Lindsey.

I love my Music Man basses. On the lest next would be other because there are a few high end brands I also really like. Next would be Fender even though I am not a big fan of their stuff but do respect what they have done for the industry and the Rick's last. I'm sure the company is a great company but I just don't like the basses. There not for me.
