My favorite track from Herbie Hancock's seminal hip hop release Future Shock. He's mixed way in the background but he was the producer on this too...Bill Laswell on bass. KickA$$ bassline! And listen to those chord choices on piano!!!! And the funky clavinet playing!!!

Herbie Hancock is amazing. When this album came out he had already played piano with Miles Davis. I think he's still making music today though he hasn't put out an album in a few years.
Maybe slightly simplistic and sophomoric but I still love The Beastie Boys - You Gotta To Fight For Your Right To Party. Complete with Kerry King's ( Slayer ) ridiculous guitar solo! 
Yes, that's a very young Kerry King of Slayer with pie on his face from the video. I love that he was open minded enough at the time to play on a rap song. This was EXACTLY at the point where Reign In Blood was released. For all of you hard core Slayer fans.

Been bouncing around YouTube since I saw this thread, but I can't go to bed before sharing Hashim's "it's Time", aka "Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)". DJs would use this as a mixing & scratching platform (try to find MP-3s of mix tapes) - a classic:

HipHop/Metal leaning towards JazzFunk. These guys fully defy genre classification though. Screaming Headless Torsos - Smile in a Wave. Fima Ephron on bass is all sorts of super awesome. This song is based upon the opening melody to the Miles Davis song titled One Phone Call BTW.

Great thread. While I don't listen to much Rap music being put out today, the rap in the 90's is probably my second favorite genre next to Rock and Roll.
My favorite rap group? A Tribe Called Quest.. They are masters of bass. Listen to the song 'Excursions' just bass and drums and it sounds as big as anything.
Another favorite has to be Wu Tang Clan. These boys had such a unique and raw style. Just listen to C.R.E.A.M... Goosebumps every time.
And last; Mobb Deep. Another suburb group. They are just the best story tellers, listen to The Infamous. I mean, I feel like I am reliving that memory with them when I hear them spit. I've lived in a pretty safe neighborhood my whole life, in the UK. These guys rapping about guns and police just gives me an insight into someone else's life through their music. These guys have the most haunting melodies in their songs. It just fits what they're rapping about.
