An old USA Peavey Foundation is kind of like a Jazz. Do they count? I've owned three or four over the years and they are very good. I've seen them on EBay for as little as $150.

I have had just the opposite experience. I have purchased three basses, a guitar for my daughter, a guitar for my nephew and my son also purchased a bass from Rondo. Not a single problem with any of them!
I can't say enough good about mine. REALLY enjoying it and I've used it at the last couple of gigs we've had. I may even take it into the studio later this year for our next cd. Hands down my vote for non-Fender, bang-for-your-buck jazz for less than 2 bills shipped.

I am partial to the G&L... I like that they just made a good Jazz Bass... they didn't add a bunch of unnecessary pre-amps and all that they just made a Jazz bass that stayed true to the original design while answering the shortcomings such as the bridge and the lack of customization options... All I got was a tinted quartersawn neck and matching headstock.

The one i'd choose if i could get one for free: Dingwall super J 5
or if it has to be a real 'copy' the Sadowsky Vintage J 4.
A friend of mine recently had a Sandberg California and a Fender Marcus Miller (the cheaper american model) for testing, he went with the Sandberg - also a nice choice.

For my money: G&L JB, no question. These are boutique quality, but heavier than most boutiques I've tried.
Cost no object: Dingwall, or for traditional, Mike Lull. I've tried several Lulls over the years, and every one has been outstanding.

Mine would be my two Brice Douglas jazz 5s. These were an upper end line from Rondo about ten years ago. Very nice jazz basses. Pics will show that
I've only played one clone and that was my friend's MIC jazz bass. I just loved it, borrowed it for a gig while my pbass was undergoing repairs. What really surprised me was the neck profile, as slim as the width was, it felt as chunky or bit more than my pbass. Great 3 tone burst with red tort guard, chrome dome knobs, which IMO look much better on a jazz opposed to the plastic black knobs. IT down right looked like a 60's jazz bass. Tone was unebelievable. Dialed it at 8 on the neck pickup, bridge and tone full on gave me a great punch at the gig.
