For a while it was Steven Wright but eventually his jokes started sounding repetitive and as he got older he seemed to lose his edge.

George Carlin by far. Few comedians ever made us think about our lives and some of the dumb poopie we do better than Carlin.
I've always loved George Carlin.
Though best known as a ventriloquist Jeff Dunham in concert spends the first 20 minutes doing stand up. I think he's hilarious.

*Pat Paulsen (RIP)...saw him back in the 70's during a faux presidential run.
*Spalding Gray (RIP)...okay, he sat down and was really not a comedian but a mesmerizing monologist / narrator.

I'll second Spalding Gray. I stumbled upon his monster in the box monologue when I was much too young and was completely enthralled. I love going back and watching all of his recordings.
Patrice O'Neal. He died in 2011. I can't post any of his clips, lest I offend delicate ears.

Back in the day, I always liked David Brenner, and pre-"Seinfeld" Jerry Seinfeld. Eddie Murphy and Don Rickles, too.

George Carlin, Ricky Gervais, Dave Chapelle, Jim Jefferies, Louis CK, Eddie Murphy back in the day, Sugar Sammy.
There are many. My more recent favorites include Ricky Gervais, Bill Burr and Dave Chappelle.
Patrice, Colin, Bobby Kelly, Vos, DiPaolo, Louis, DeRosa - those guys were even funnier on Opie and Anthony than they were on stage.
Also Shane Gillis and Matt McCusker are pretty freaking great.

Absolutely. Even Jimmy. I love Jimmy on his various shows but his stand up was never great, IMO. Patrice was hilarious no matter what he was doing.
