I got a 4X8 sheet of Arauco plywood from Menards today ($23) and I got everything cut for my 15/6 except the bracing and the midrange driver compartment. :hyper:

Quick question...how quick does one get a shipment from speakerhardware (ballpark on standard shipping from KS to WI)? I'm still waiting on our tax refund and should get it soon, but I'm working on the cab so I can put the order in ASAP and be ready for the components when they arrive.

I'm going to use the black "pet screen" material Leland sells for the grill. I always haul my own gear so I'm not worried about needing a steel grill for it. I'm thinking of going with Bombay Mahogany stain/poly for the finish. It's a real deep blood red gloss stain/poly that looks killer on other projects/cabs I've used it on.

I might even airbrush flames coming from the bottom on the black pet screen grill. I know how to do "tru-flame"...like what I did on this unplayable violin I painted for a Music Conservatory fundraiser a while back (I called it "Hot Music")...got auctioned off for a pretty good amount.

It'll make the cab look like it's on fire (and by airbrushing it, it shouldn't clog it or affect the sound). :D

I actually have a lot of questions, but I'm trying to double check them all in hopes of not being terribly redundant. This one I'm pretty sure I've not seen addressed here...

PL Premium Advanced... I saw this right next to the PL Premium on the shelf at the local mega-hardware store. You know, like all Advanced _____ it's bigger, better, faster, stronger (queue the 6 Million Dollar Man music).

My question is, IS IT? The only place I've seen this addressed, it was said to be thicker and therefore better for filling in imprecise gaps, but... other than that?

I bought three PL Premiums, and one Advanced... for the cause. Any thoughts?

I saw the exact same thing today. It was about $2 more per caulking tube. Is it really worth that much more? I've always used carpenters glue before (with good joints), and the PL looks to be much better.

How are the fumes with this stuff (either the Premium or advanced)? My workshop is in my basement and the warning label on it makes it seem quite toxic. I ain't using anything with toxic fumes that are too insane. I can always caulk seams later if I can't use the PL. I was thinking about picking some up tomorrow, but now I'm not so sure.

I have not used advanced yet. Investigated it, and at least one builder on BFM's forum has used it. It sets faster, a good thing, supposed to be a stronger bond, a good thing, but, and to me it's a killer, the resulting joint is more brittle. Takes more pressure to break it, but failure will the catastrophic when it does go. I've tested PL Premium against many other glues. It has a certain amount of give before it lets go, and then fails very slowly. Certainly stronger than anything else I've tested. That ability to absorb punishment without failure is important in cabs that are going to get hauled around.

2 to 3 days Fedex. I try very hard to get any order in before noon out the same day. If I have to make something for the order it will delay it a day, maybe 2.

From the looks of that violin I may be preaching to the choir here, but test, test, test your stain. My experience with plywood and stain is blotchiness, and uneven penetration. Wood conditioner first for sure.

I don't know if anyone's tried a build with PL Premium Advanced, but the sense is that it might be more rigid after curing and thus possibly more brittle, but no one knows yet. Save $2 and get the cheap stuff :-)

PL premium giveth, and the random orbital sander taketh away.

I've used that stain/poly before on ply and I do use a conditioner first, but I also brush on multiple coats. By the time I'm done it is VERY dark, almost painted yet you can see grain through it. It's a very dark, blood red...almost the way dried blood looks. It's also a very durable finish. I've dented cabs with it and you can hardly tell anything was done to them.

And thanks on the delivery schedule. Now if my damned tax return would get deposited, I'd be all set.

I got some of the cab put together. Need to cut braces...maybe tonight yet...we'll see how it goes with four kids vying for time. ;)

Question for everyone, where did you get your plywood? I checked Lowes and they had crap, Home Depot had 1/2 inch birch for 43 bucks.

Whats the lightest 1/2 inch plywood people have used for these? Arauco or Baltic Birch? And where did you end up picking them up?

I think I read of some guy using some Italian plywood..... where do you find that and is it lighter than the other options?

Menards is like Home Depot, Lowe's etc. It's a Midwest place. I found 1/2" 4X8 Baltic Birch there for $53 and the 3/4" was on sale for only $28. But who the hell wants 3/4"?

The Arauco was the cheapest. Not sure how light it is comparatively, but it's pretty nice both sides and I do believe void free (haven't found anything inspecting edges on cuts...seems to be solid throughout).

We have a Home Depot too, but I have a Menards charge card (I practically live there...other projects) so I'm usually buying things for my job anyway.

I paid $41 for my birch for the 15/6, and $21 for the Auraco for the rack case I'm building... I had to take about 3 sheets of the Auraco out before I found one that didn't have huge voids, but after those sheets, they all looked to be void free. Also bought both 4x8 sheets at Menards.

Softer. Dents more easily than BB. 5 plies as opposed to 9. It's not as strong. But, if you're nice to your cab, it's fine.

Watch out what you buy in Birch, especially the 4x8 sheets. The chinese stuff has a paper thin face. Does not glue well in a butt joint cab, you have to dowel or use biscuits. The outer face will peel right off. Real birch will have 7 to 9 EQUAL plies.

Arauco sure seems to cut beautifully. Nice smooth cuts, no chipping and it also seems to be very uniform throughout. I don't know much else about it as this is my first time using it.

If it's lighter...then all the better.
