fEARful™ Part Ten (10)

Thanks for chiming in!
I think I'll just probably get another new one and then get this one reconed when Eminence gets the kits out there. In the meantime, I should probably get my act together and get a 12/6/1 in production so I don't have to hit this one so hard!

They are available, Eminence makes them as ordered, a non stock item. We have to buy in 10's which sucks. I have an a Eminence order going in next week, I'll order them.

Quick question. Sorry if this has been mentioned in one of the other 10,000 fEARful threads...

I'd like to reduce the width of the regular 15/6 by only 1/2" to match my head case. I know I can add about 11/16" to the height to keep the internal volume almost exactly the same.

What affect will that have on the tuning if the width of the port is 1/2" less? Do I need to make the port longer or shorter to keep the same tuning? Or does it make too little a difference? I'm not familiar enough with shelf ports and WinISD isn't very accurate when it comes to calculating them.

I may just stick right to the plans, but in order to latch my headcase to the top of the cab I'll need to add 1/4" to each side of the headcase where the latches attach. I'd rather not do that as my headcase latches and matches perfectly to my two 110/6 mini cabs I already have/use and the fEARful is way overkill for some of my small blues gigs where the 110/6's are more appropriate to take.

My gut feeling is that you can change the width a half
inch without tilting the world on it's axis.
The port should change some, but may not be enough of an issue to worry about.

I am somewhat tempted to build a 15/6 with H and W to match an early 2-12 bassman cabinet.
It'd look cool and be 'stealthy' under my '61 6G6 Bassman head!

I realize it won't make a huge amount of difference, but I'd like to keep everything as close to the plans as possible and if I make a slight adjustment, I'd like to compensate by altering it elsewhere to keep it where it was designed to be.

It isn't critical to reduce the fEARful width and I can always mod my 110 cab to accommodate the wider latch span the stock fEARful width would cause to my headcase. Which is probably the easiest route to go.

Just thinking out loud here. :D

That is a crazy amount of power. Realistically far too much for a single cab. You need less power or more cabinets.

Yeah, but it's soooo much fun!

Seriously, though, I'd rather have too much power than too little. I usually run at far less than maximum power and I am confident that I will never clip the amp. I believe that having a smaller amp that will run at the edge of clipping can potentially create more damage.

Weirdly, when it went, I was actually not playing all that loud. Still, it's good to know where my limits are.

Nobody on the stage or in the room complained about the levels.Everybody seemed to really like it!

Edwinhurwitz; Before I spent money, I'd call Eminence customer service and see if they might warranty or goodwill a new driver, or offer you one at cost. they have always been friendly, helpful, and accommodating whenever I've talked with them.
It's worth a shot.

I tried this yesterday, but they are closed on Friday. Monday I will be having a conversation with them. If nothing comes of it, I'll get in touch with Leland to get it reconed. Might as well keep it in the family!

Was there ever a discussion in these threads about what mid driver pairs up best with the bass driver?

Im considering building a 12/6/1 and I was wondering what people though the differences in mid drivers were. Theres a lot of discussion on the woofers, but not much on the mid drivers.

Since Id be going with a 3012LF, it seems Id have the option of 4 mid drivers. I see a lot of people going with the18sound drivers and not many people using the Alpha/Alphalite ones. Any reason for the 18 sound over the eminence ones?

Unsolicited advice to neobassman ...
Beauty job on the construction and the documentation! Far as the Eden cab goes... There is your excuse to build a 12.6 ! The 12.6 is the single most useful cab I've ever used... Previously that title was held by a Bag End D-10XD. My 12.6 will bury it at half the weight and just a tad bigger... Just the thing for introducing unsuspecting diners to the 'brown note' at that lounge gig :D

Unsolicited 'pimp' to Singlemalt - yeah, I got snow. I got snow this morning at Meadows. (now, you got job? I have a tougher time with that ...) Got huge snow earlier this week up at Steven's Pass. What a cool hill! Dude, we gotta road trip that one sometime... I'm goin back for sure.

You scope the slide pic's from Meadows ? They don't call it A-zone for nothing...

Stevens Pass, Meadows, stick the knife in a little bit more. Both places are awesome. I live 20 minutes from Alpental and haven't been on my board this year. It's killing me. 1st year in about 10 I haven't had a season pass. Dammit all!!!!!! Too many commitments this winter. Sorry for the the unsolicited rant. Back to your fEarful station.

Well here's an action shot for you guys of me with my fEarful 15/6 made by LDS. Definitely the best cab I've owned, and I've done quite a bit of gear schlepping to get here.

I built a 12/6 with the Alpha mid driver. It sounds fine to me, although I've never heard the 18Sound. Greenboy suggested I use the Alphalite in my 2nd 12/6.

Update.

I picked up a little buzz from e down through c. It was only there at stupid loud, but I was having no part in having that haunt me.

I took the shotgun approach.

I installed foam gaskets under the speakers and all the cutouts. I also patched one router gaff in the mid cutout by sawing a block out with a coping saw and then gluing a replacement piece in.

As long a I was at it, I also put foam gasket on the mounting blocks for the grill.

It once again passes the crush test without springing a leak. I also now understand what folks are talking about with low frequency compression with a Thunderfunk. I could clearly hear it, but by the time I did it was so crazy loud I'd be in the dog house for being too loud.

Random thought, here.
I built by crossovers.
I used some PL to hold down the inductors, along with a tie wrap.
It looks like that'll keep from moving any.

While I wait for an improvement in my money situation, ( bookings are picking up :D ) I used one crossover and
an 18 Sound mid to upgrade my old 1-15 cab.
It makes a real difference in clarity ansd definition with the old EVM15B.

On the other hand, it makes me really want to seee what the real fEarful will be like! :hmm:

Had a very nice chat with greenboy and Leland yesterday. Thanks guys-very informative and helpful.I'm really late to this but looks like I'm going to give it a try. It's taken me a bit to go back through all 10 parts and I have a ways to go.But looks like just what I'm looking for.

Anyone have any gigs under your belt with the 1212/6??

There's a thread somewhere here that lists who owns what fearfuls. IIRC, not many 1212/6 in use as they are big and heavy. Big benefit of the 12/6 and 15/6 designs is their size, weight, and modularity, IE, stacking another only when needed.
