fEARful™ Part Ten (10)

Does anybody know if a 12" Cube stacked on a 15" fEarful, both in the /6/1 configuration will provide the same stage filling volume as an 8x10 fridge?

Wondering if a 12/15 stack will do the trick for festival stages.

I personally think its in the same ballpark. I have a 2x15 fEARful rig, and I would go up against a 8x10 rig any day and very honestly think it would stomp the 8x10. The 12 isn't that much quieter.

I've read where a 15/6 with enough watts is the equivalent of a 610, so I would say both a 12/6 and 15/6 together with enough power should outdo an 810 with more clear low end.

I can't get arauco in my area. The local Lowes stores don't carry it and there aren't any Menards around here. I built my 12/6 (and a pair of BFM of cabs) out of regular pine plywood. Maybe I was lucky, but I didn't find any voids...except in a 2' x 4' "handy panel" I picked up because it fit in my car.

I've built cabs out of the cheapest plywood I could find already. It was only "void free" because the voids didn't cost any extra. :smug:

But, with proper bracing cheap plywood does work, although at high volumes the voids do cause vibration and resonances you normally wouldn't want. Still, it wasn't very noticeable.

Its probably also important to point out to the possible DIYer who is reading this and starting to think about building a fEARful, that you don't NEED a specific type of wood to do your build.

Please don't allow the lack of access to fancy brand-name woods derail you from this project. fEARfuls have been built from any number of plywood types (and at least a few non-plywood types. As always at TB everyone likes to hand-wring about some of the small details, and its easy to buy into any of them being make-it-or-break-it. That's definitely not the case. DO follow the plans. DO pay attention to the details important to the build (speakers, electronics, and the 'assembly facts') but don't get side tracked by things that are not going to be performance dependent but are rather 'choices'.

:)

^ Agreed. However, if one is spending all the time, effort and money on building a cab like a 15/6, I'd personally spend a few extra bucks on good quality wood.

I entirely feel that way too, and when doing mine didn't want to take a 'second' choice. But within reason, the wood choices (once you get to a reasonable grade, and not bottom of the barrel stuff) made will either: Look nicer, be lighter, or both. People need to realize that some of the things that are discussed are not make/break options but stuff that we sometimes like to make a big deal out of. Having a passing acquaintance and opportunity to talk with the guy who put together these plans tells me he's about as un-fussy a guy as you'll ever meet. EXCEPT when it comes to the performance of these cabs.

Although I seem to remember early on, some guys using basically 'cheap scrap' wood and not having any complaints with their cabs.

+1. One could literally throw together this thing with the absolute crappiest wood on the planet and even just be reasonably close to the plans. As long as it was loaded with the 3015LF, the 18Sound mid, the right crossover, everything else could be done really sloppy and cheap and it would still probably be better than 90% of cabs commercially available.

We probably nit-pick over small details because the process of building one takes a little time and hashing out details on TB gives us something to do while the glue sets and we wait on parts. :D Besides, this is TB after all...nit-picking is what we do!

with only 4 clamps glueing is taking some time but it's getting there...

It's true what they're saying, you really hear EVERYTHING with this bad boy. I used to like my P and J equally, now I'm leaning strongly towards my J. Now my amp sounds great. I tried it out with my Ashdown 115D to see how much more volume, but it's not needed, the tone goes down the tubes when you begin turning it up (mud). The Fearful is sweet and plenty loud on it's own (I'm not a gigging musician). Thinking about building a 12/6 for something more portable.

So how does a fEarful sound?

I'm no Gordon Holt (legendary Stereophile reviewer.) So, I'm not going to try and verbalize it.

Attached are two clips recorded with a Marantz PMD620 at close range. The bass is a Barker B1 fretless with TI Jazz flats, and I'm using a Thunderfunk TFB420 flat.

Very nice, Interceptor! I listened through my Sony MDR7506 cans and could clearly hear the difference. I clearly heard the mid talking; the low-mid "tak-tak-tak" on each note was evident. That Barker bass; that's a 5-string fretless? Sounds fantastic.

Apropo of nothing, here's a link to my friend's website. It's an unsurpassed collection of live recordings from the golden era of fusion music. Hope my fellow fEarful enthusiasts might enjoy, and perhaps even GB, where ever he may be...

He's resting safely in his mountain bunker hideaway.

I've been corresponding with Leland at Speaker Hardware about being the first to get a 12/6 flatpack.

Seems he's just about ready to start taking orders.

He sent me a preview of the pics for the assembly instructions. He even includes biscuit joints for the braces! I think my wife (who barely knows a saw from a hammer) could assemble one of these kits.

That sounds awesome.
