fEARful™ Part Ten (10)

I plan on building one of these, but don't know if I want 15/6 or 12/6.

I haven't read all 9000 posts to see if this has been covered.

Anyone steer me in a direction (link) to find some info on the sound differences?

Especially for the fEARFUL's

Thanks!

Tonally they're all pretty much the same, as would be expected in cabs using the same line of woofers and the same mids. The choice for what cab depends on your needs of:

Volume
Weight
Height
Impedance (dual cabs are 4 ohms)

I could be wrong, but my understanding from what I have read is that the two sound fairly similar except that the 15/6 is capable of a lot more volume.

I just heard back from the online retailer that the 3012LF I purchased was out of stock. (They said they had 12 in stock when I placed the order) I'm interested to see if they are going to try say they cannot get anymore since the price hike or try to jack up my price. They said 10 days for more to arrive. We'll wait and see.

For anyone interested, I'm buying a MiniDSP and having Putnam fix it up with 2 Trs inputs/4 outputs, an input pad switch, and power jack. Will let you all know how the 48db butterworth stuff works out.

If nothing else, it's a 300 dollar high quality tiny DSP box.

I believe there are still a couple of reputable sellers on eBay that have the 3012LF for $179 (brand new). And some sellers have already jacked the price up th $315.

315 is MAP price for the 3012lf. All eminence dealers sign a MAP. We can sell for whatever we want, but you can't advertise under that price. That's why on so many sites you have to add to cart to see the actual price on many different brands. MAP is very common.

Just out of curiosity. I see you mention a Fearful Sub.. is the normal fearful not have enough bottom?
How close would a fearful sub with a 3015 be to a TL606 is the other question.

Out of ANY cab, production or otherwise, the fEARful is least likely to need a sub. But this is no reason not to have one. Just imagine the loudest, biggest, widest, most even sounding cabinet you've ever heard...then think of one even better than that. Adding a sub just has doubled that ideal cab's awesomeness.

svtb:

In a 15/6, the mid is padded back (its output is reduced) to match the output of the woofer. However, the same mid is capable of playing loud enough to keep up with 2 of the woofers, so it's not that you need a sub, but by adding one and running the mid driver full tilt, you get the same great tone, but louder.

Hope it works well for you RP. Lookin' forward to seeing the form factor you come up with. I've never approached needing a pad in mine so far, what are you planning on sending it?

He's just wiring up a switch to the input hotness jumper -- so I can change it with a switch from .9vrms to 2vrms without having to pop a jumper.

It'll probably be in just a tough aluminum box with all TRS jacks to make it smaller.

We're talking about wiring it to be true bypass (so I can shut it off and have it still pass signal) so I can fool around with using it as a low pass for synthing or some crap if I want.

I think I might see if I can figure out how to write an android app to control it with my phone :P Haven't done any android programming yet but my java-fu is pretty solid.
