fEARful™ Part Ten (10)

Rattles can be hard to locate.

Understatement of the year/decade/millennium !!!!!!!!!!!

(off topic) I have a 15" Trace Elliot Combo, it was fine when I got it but soon it developed a buzz. It drove me crazy. Eventually I tracked it down to a handle that was spring loaded, the spring had broken.

(on topic) I have just pulled the trigger on a 3015LF and have a mid driver (the number escapes me now) on order to build either a fEARful 15+6 or 15+6tube. Cannot decide which, it depends which fits in my car best. I am not renowned for rushing projects so don't hold your collective breaths.

So where are all the fEarful ROCK/METAL/PUNK players?

Just sayin' cuz it seems like some are not interested in the fEarful possibly due to the way most of these cabs look, misconceptions about "antiseptic tone" or cab synergy with tube amps.. ? and/or due to the general boutique/snob appeal of the hifi design.. (ie it seems like there are less pbass players on these threads than say, Dingwall.. )

I use mine with a mongrel parts bass, overdrive (Tronographic Rusty Box cuts your ears off thru this cab) and sloppy 3- chord garage punk/rock.

15/6 tube:
The Duratex looks gray in the pic but it's actually a very deep purple.

I'm rockin' a fEARful 15/6 in a classic rock band that typically plays pretty damn loud...Ozzy, Bon Jovi, Kiss, Deep Purple, Alice in Chains, Night Ranger, Aerosmith, Sammy Hagar, Scorpions, Judas Priest, AC/DC, etc.

I use a Yamaha BB415 and I usually have the P-Bass pickup full on. The words "boutique" and "hi-fi" typically aren't part of my vocabulary.

My credo is "Rock music ain't polite, it's supposed to be loud!" so I'm not really part of the snob crowd. Actually, I don't think many fEARful owners are snobs at all. I wish more players could play through one. But in a way, it's almost reverse snobbery...hard core players prefer old, heavy, outdated cabs just to look cool onstage even though something like a 1515/66 fEARful would easily kill these players old heavy rigs.

Its also sort of why I've stopped suggesting these cabs to people who are looking for basic general cabinet advice. Everyone acts like you're part of some kind of science cult...

...but then, until you've played one, you don't really know how good it can be. :atoz:

the 3015 went up over $100 since last week if i remember correctly

I just heard back from the online retailer that the 3012LF I purchased was out of stock. (They said they had 12 in stock when I placed the order) I'm interested to see if they are going to try say they cannot get anymore since the price hike or try to jack up my price. They said 10 days for more to arrive. We'll wait and see.

You say that like its a bad thing............

No, but the backlash gets kind of witchhunty and then people get all worked up. Mostly guys who have never played one or any of the other available similar cabs. And they act like you're being elitist by even suggesting one. I was hoping the TB153 would sort of take the design to people who otherwise would stick to the same ol' same ol'.

I rock the fEARful as well. We play some originals along with covers from the likes of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Tool. I love 'em and I think they look cool as well.

They are great for modeling. I used Acme B2s before and they just had a hard time keeping up with a 100watt half stack. I was always paranoid I was going to destroy something. These bad boys get loud so bring the ROCK!

Edit: I forgot to ask. What is the best speaker cable for Metal :)

ok.. wow...im guessing it can put out high SPL too... very cool
LOL...the "normal" fEARful 15/6 is anything but normal. It kicks serious low end...with clarity. Personally I don't think I'd need to build a 15 Sub as the 15/6 alone kicks out so much clean low end that it's possible to cause sterility. :D

My band runs two JBL SRX728 subs driven by two 4000 watt QSC power amps in our PA. During sound check at the last gig one of the guitarists thought I needed to be turned up a bit more in the PA. I was muted in the PA at the time. :smug:

So no...I don't need a 15 Sub. Just curious about it.

This may be a real stupid question but here goes.. Is there a Plan B just in case Neo goes through the roof.. Is there any other ceramic type speaker that can do what the 3015 or 3015LF does?

Not really. It would be back to the drawing board for fairly extensive re-design in both the box and the crossover and you still would be hard put to find a driver that can compare. Also, we're talking about the 3015LF on all the 15" designs, and the 3012LF on the smaller boxes.

QUEG. I LOVE THAT GRILL! Man that looks awesome dude.

I play hard grunge music mostly. You can listen to some stuff recorded with my fEarful actually -- one mic on the mid, one on the woof, and a DI (distortion on this channel on one of the songs..the version which hasn't been updated yet, doh).

Still working on the mixing a lot, but it's kinda there:

If the 3015LF was 300 bucks out the door it would still be cheaper than any woofer on the market that could do the same in non-neo.

It'd need to get up >400 before looking at alternatives makes sense (imho).

* It seems possible you could use a definimax 4015LF with some serious xover adjustments (More padding, lower crossover point?). But you sacrifice a lot of performance and weigh a lot more.

....
I for one am waiting on my backordered 3015LF... I also ask the same about UT bassplayers: I started the TB club years ago and zero adherents. (I know they're out there too, as I have over 20 of the best as guest-artists on my label, HGR (Heavy Guitar Rock) RECORDS | Facebook .)

What to do if the Neo goes through the roof?

Pay the man.

After living with a fearful for a while, I really can't think of any reason I'd drag anything else around. They are that good. Thank you greenboy.

Things aren't that bad. Things were really good and now are being adjusted to good.

I paid $300 for my first gigging rig back in the early '70's. What is that today - $1200 - $1500 in today's currency?

That rig was 150 pounds and barely kept up with a Twin Reverb.

My current rig is on the order of 1/3 the weight, can deal with a five string and is much louder. And, it can be put together today for less than $300 in early '70's loot.

Usspeakers has the 3015lf for 180 bucks, don't know if that is still the actual price. In this price range there are two non-neo's that comes close, the B&C 15 PS76 and the RCF L15P540.

The 3015LF costs 185euro's over here.
One non-neo driver that has the same linear excursion(well, we never know exactly) is the Oberton 15xb700. This driver cost 223euro's, it's a bit more expensive but it has a higher thermal rating, 1000watts instead of 450watts. So power compression will be slightly better.
