fEARful™ Part Twelve (12)

If I wanted a fEARful 12/6/1 that could double as a practice cab for use in my garage, what are some super-low noise amps you guys can recommend?

I've noticed that even really quiet noises can bug me when practicing in a quiet room, and knowing how well fEARfuls represent the sound going into them, any noises produced by the amp will come through clearly.

So any ideas?
My LMII was dead silent, but my gkmb500 does have some audible noise as does various carvin amps that I've used.

Shuttle 9 or streamliner. Keep in mind unshielded basses, or non humbucker pickups etc can be a cause.
My favorite blues band bass right now is a G&L SB-2 and it buzzes, depending on what angle I face. My musicman through the same Genz = zero buzz/hum.

Only amps I've ever found that are truly, truly hiss free have all been tube amps.

However everything about either recommending a fearful or a big tube amp for a garage practice rig seems silly. If you have the opportunity it is fun though!

I've found I have more fun/problems with feedback from the 6" than any amp hiss. Pretty cool having a bass cab that does the guitar cab thing.

Anyone got a clear picture of a crossover for a 151566? I just finished the cab and would like to do the wiring this weekend. I tried joining the greenboy forums... but have to wait until they get back to me :bawl:

Hi HIJ, It shouldn't be much of a wait. Greenboy is on the board consistently, and I know that at least some of the accounts have activated today. What's the user name you've chosen?

Thanks dug! That's exactly what I needed!

BS - I used HIJ also on the forum.

Two other crossover questions:

It looks like I should be using solid core wire rather than stranded?

I also decided to put a horn on the 151566. Would I run the inputs to the Xover for the horn from the speakon jack or from the mid range output?

I used stranded, and there's no real reason not to. I'd especially use stranded on the runs to your speakers.

Run your tweeter in parallel to the speakon inputs just like the LP and the mid.

Give GB a bit to check in on the forum and I'm sure you'll be up and running sometime this afternoon. He vets each account individually. I do see that our friend Greg Backstrom has been added to the list this morning...

Shouldn't take long.

Here's a build I did for Vlad using the alternate iron core inductors and Mills resistors:

Your account at the fEARful forum has been activated. :)

I'm sure this has been asked before. I've been looking on my own for awhile now and cannot find an answer. So I'm just going to go ahead and ask. ;)

I own a Eden WT800a. 4ohms per channel 8 ohms bridged. Can fEARful cabs with dual woofers be wired to 8ohms? Can cabs with single woofers be wired to 4?

Sorry for the tired question and thanks in advance.

In my opinion, the best option is to build a single 15/6 and run the amp in bridge mode.

That amp is an interesting case as it can only go down to 8 ohms in bridge mode. It is not a good match to the fEARful dual driver configurations, unfortunately.

Even if you built a pair of single driver 8 ohm cabinets and run separate channels, the amp would only push around 200W into each one. Or you could run a single channel into a dual driver cab to get 400W into it, but the result is the same. A pair of dual driver cabs will let the amp give its max output, but the speakers will be able to handle a lot more than it can provide.

800W into a 15/6 will give you nice headroom and will be very loud, but in case you need more volume you will need to replace the amp.

Can fEARful cabs with dual woofers be wired to 8ohms? Can cabs with single woofers be wired to 4?

No and No. The fEarfuls use the Eminence 3012LF or 3015LF woofers. Both of these drivers are only available in 8 Ohm impedance (unless you have a custom OEM agreement with them).

So a single woofer cab is always going to be 8 ohms, the dual woofer cab is always going to be wired in parallel for a 4 Ohm load.

That's the bad news. The good news is that a single 15/6 cab will take everything your amp can throw at it when bridged.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, I don't think a single 15/6/1 will cover me. I was hoping for a 15/6/1 with a 15sub config. I guess I could try and find a WT800b or c. IMO that is getting kinda ridiculous considering I have not actually ever heard one of these cabs. ...back to the drawing board. :scowl:

My single 15/6 is more than enough to compete with a loud drummer, a guitarist with a 100 watt Hughes and Kettner Switchblade half stack and another guitarist with a 100 watt Marshall half stack playing loud heavy rock. Just sayin..

I would love to try one out. I have asked around and no one has even HEARD of fEARful. I'll keep trying in that dept. As far a volume goes I need the equivalence of a 810. (please spare volume lectures. I know. I know. :rollno:)
