Double Bass Fearful, Fearless, Greenboy for dummies

Greenboy designed 2 different groups of cabs.
The Fearful design came first.
Designed around a certain speaker (s). He made the plans free to anyone who wanted to build one. You can also get them built to spec by an authorized builder.
The fearless design came next. Box design layout is a little different, and only available as a constructed cab through authorized builder.
You can google to find a builder near you if you want to go that route. Or if you join the greenboy forums, theres a map of folks who own one. Perhaps they would let you try before you buy.
Some folks like the design, some dont. like anything else.

He has a forum at his site that's worth visiting, though you have to sign up in order to lurk.

Story: TB'er greenboy created a series of high performance lightweight speaker designs that revolve around the new "super" woofers plus midrange / tweeter and crossovers. You can build from his plans, buy kits of pre-cut parts from Speaker Hardware, or finished cabs from a number of small custom builders. He calls these "fearful."

He has also created a series of designs called "fearless" that are only available through his approved builders. I think the switch from open to proprietary designs had to do with one or more commercial builders taking advantage of his name and designs.

I'd say the main deciding point between fEARful and fEARless is whether you want to build one yourself, or have one built. I think that if I needed that much sound, I'd build a fEARful without hesitation, but for my playing at lower volumes I'm satisfied with a couple of more compact speakers that I designed myself.

Dave,
Mike Arnopol who came up the initial idea for the cabinet, and designed, and built the first ones, is no longer producing the composite Crazy 8's or 88's, as it was detrimental to his health, beyond belief. The only ones available now from Green Boy are wood ones. The time and investment required for a recirculating air spray booth and suits was cost prohibitive.

Also, do a Google or TB search for Dually and Bassic (those are Greenboy designs as well). I think those fall into the fEARless category. Those are some nice cabs!

That explains a lot. It's a shame but I feel fortunate that I was able to get one of Mike's crazy 8's.
At this point I'm trying to figure out if there is a fearless cab out there that matches/exceeds my ten2ex with less weight.
I have a flite 15 which is a paper weight at around 17lbs but it doesnt sound as good as either the AI or the 8.
Will keep researching...

I owned a pair of Flite 2x8's with the NEAR black aluminum drivers that were cooled by a some kind of liquid suspension. One of the cabinets, had the Midrange driver as well. They were light but, the Crazy 8's were lighter and better sounding. I think you have the best available, unless you were able to get you hands on a Crazy 88 or the MA 2x5's, there was one of those in the TB Classifieds.
