I took my 15/6 to the recent Twin Cities (MN) bass GTG at hdracer's place. Many people wanted to try it out - and every single one of them said something to the effect of "Wow!"

We recorded parts of our last gig using one of those little Tascam solid state digital stereo recorders. I have NEVER before heard the bass sit so clearly in the mix on a cheap-and-dirty live recording.

And besides that, it's green!

That is The Combo From Hell, right there. You had a great idea to make the 3U space up top. I could see more folks doing that. In fact, I'd have done it if I didn't already have several 4U racks with my pres/power amps already.

Re: The 15Sub. One thing I don't understand is why GB didn't design it with the same form factor as the 15/6. I.E. the same depth. By making it taller you would keep the same airspace. It's probably got something to do with the "magic dimensions" or "rule of squares" or some other audio-property type thing. I think I asked this over in GB's forums...they are blocked at work so I can't check.

Ah, I assumed that they would be the same dimensions as well.:hmm:

I have a foam core 15/6/1 on the way from Art of Noise soon and hope to have a 15 sub made in the near future.
I hope my OCD doesn't get the better of me here...:help:

@mikeddd: Thanks for your post! My crossover was pre-assembled by Leland, so that's more or less out of the question (although he forgot the extra etch on the mid board, which I did myself ;)).

I can play my cab pretty loud without any problems, also it looks like the distortion comes in play after let's say an hour or so. Measuring the impedance doesn't hurt, thanks!

No idea, but I am glad it isn't any taller .. with the rack on top it is about 6 feet .. any more height and I would need a ladder to hoist the rack up there . lol ..

The 15sub is meant to work well as a standalone subwoofer for PA duty, and a tall shallow form factor is not so desirable for that. There are also baffle step and coupling/stacking considerations that greenboy optimized with great deliberation. If you prefer a taller cab, just build a second 15/6, preferably with a mirror-imaged baffle. If you feel you don't need the second 6, leave it out and put a switchable padding network in the cab with the mid driver. ;)

Concerning 15sub dimensions, there are several reasons they are what they are. You brought this up on my forum and I answered there, over the course of several posts, mike. You were there to post so I assume you were also there to read since you quoted several of those posts.

The "matched depth" approach is inferior acoustically with the 15sub's intended purpose of working modularly with all the dedicated-mid-driver fEARfuls. As well as acoustic advantages to the current dimensions, those dimensions make the 15sub capable of matching width dimensions with any other fEARful model - the 12/6, the 12/6cube, the 15/6, the 15/6tube, the 1212/6, and the 1515/66 all work with the 15sub.

Even visually I consider the other approach inferior, with any one of these other fEARfuls. The new esthetic is that form follows function and the best is always more beautiful ; }

I won't be on TB that often, folks.

If I was cutting the wood myself, I'd most probably adjust the dimensions accordingly to make them the same depth.

Don't forget to measure and adjust actual port tuning then, and then design and build your own crossover to accommodate how your changes impact frequency response.

Thanks very much for the explanation, Passinwind. Now that you've tickled my foggy memory, I do believe GB explained that to me in his forums...can't remember for sure though.

Being that I'm going to be adding a 15Sub, what has to be done to put in the pad disconnect switch for the mid crossover? Do all five resistors just need to be taken out of the circuit completely? I'd have to redo my crossover completely...or just build a new one and design it that way from the get go. Thoughts?

Wow...I honestly did not think anything other than airspace would need to be modifed. Shows you how out of my league I am on this. :crying: Thanks very much.

GB: I was typing my post to Charlie while you replied to me. Now that Charlie tickled my brain; YES, you did answer that question for me on your forums...I just couldn't remember for sure and I can't check your forums from work as they are blocked, unfortunately. Thank you for posting the answer here too.

And Thank You for sharing your design with the world. My playing has seriously improved since I completed my fEarful. I love my sound and play more. More practice equals better bassist. Never really LOVED my sound before. Got a "good sound" a "decent sound" a "it works" sound. But now w/my 15/6/1 I get "THE SOUND" for whatever tone I need for the tune. Thank you! :bassist:

I like your crossover. Very solid build. Did you put a drop of hot melt glue on the terminal strip terminals when done? I have a terminal strip in my 15/6 and wasn't going to, but thought "Ah, why not?" right before I closed it up

Now worries Mike, we're all still learning as long as we're still kickin'.;)

You'll really do better with most of these questions on GB's forum. I don't even own a fEARful cab currently, and am trying to kick the DIY cab design/building habit. It's a much different landscape these days than when I started...and in a really good way!
