fEARful part 13: the bad luck's done, son

I would like to spiff up my 15/6 a bit. I saw some nice blue/black velour type cloth at a store recently and thought that it would like great on my cab.

I know there is a concern about how cloth can deaden the tone of the cab. However, for my tone I prefer to do quite a bit of cutting of treble and high-mids and use 5 year old flatwounds for a nice thumpy, round tone. For a guy like me does it really matter if the cloth is not audio grade quality?

Just FYI I used to have a markbass 112 combo and I hid the ugly orange driver by covering the grill with a mid weight cloth and it worked fine. As long as the ports are not interfered with it seems to work well. However, I just wanted to collect some fEARful wisdom on this topic before I expend the time and effort to put on the grill cloth.

Cover it with whatever you like. If your cab is built correctly, the covering should have no effect.

I think he's referring to grill cloth. That could have an effect, couldn't it?

All right, I found a 3015LF and 6ND410 for great prices ($205 and $100 respectively), and they are on their way to me.

But I'm partially chickening out... I'm going with a cut kit for my (first) 15/6. I'm sure I'll learn lots anyway. I figure I'll buy a sheet of cheap 1/2" plywood and practice my cuts on that, in fact I'll try to make a fEARful replica out of the cheap stuff to see how accurate I can be.

Didn't get it out to practice, but I blew a woofer in my Aggy so I won't have any excuses next Friday.

I ran my mp3 player through the stereo mini jack input on the iAmp but there must have been some kind of mismatch because it sounded horrible. Not the cabs fault to be sure.

From my experience and tastes the shuttle 6.0 is too anemic in the lows. You can dial them in, but doing so means you've scooped some of the amp's volume ability. Add to that that IMO the shuttle 6.0 is not what I would call a loud amp (compared to other micros I've owned) I can definitely see how the shuttle 6.0 would not be a great choice for an 8 ohm fEARful. IMHO, YMMV etc.

Interesting. Mine weighs the same, but yours has the tweeter and mine does not. I think you did quite well.

Yeah, the shuttle 6 paired my schroeder 1212r was not a good match at all.

I'd love to hear a GB Streamliner though, as apparently they are very different sounding from the shuttles.

A note on Pickles' cab: It was the first prototype that I built with the XPS and epoxy method. I built it before I had the drivers which is why the mid/tweeter spacing is a little wider than spec.

Actually I was thinking of replacing the grill with a mattress for more protection. Seriously, though - will the badge block the mids?
