fEARful part 13: the bad luck's done, son

I used 4 or 5 coats of Krylon on both of my fEARful cabs without any protective clear coat. One cab was built in March of 2009, the other was build earlier this year. The finish on both cabs is starting to show some wear, but nothing that needs immediate touch up.

BTW: When/if I do repaint them, I think a fluorescent green baffle will go well with the current Hunter Green of my cabs.

Hi guys, been away on holiday a couple of weeks and I see greenboy has started a thread in the fEARful forums about trying the midrange and tweeter with normal polarity.

Anyone tried it yet? Results?

I will try it soon and post my feedback here, too. May help some people decide whether to do it or not.

I am just wrapping up the build of my second 15/6, and this time I swapped polarity (after testing the 6ND mid's polarity) so that + OUT on mid crossover connects to + IN on speaker. Result: 6" is bringing a lot more to the party compared to my first 15/6 cab with the reversed polarity.

Definitely will be reversing mid polarity of cab #1.

My fEARful build has officially begun! I snagged a slightly used 3015LF from a guy on Craiglist for $175 shipped! I'm planning on taking my time with the build, doing what I can when finances allow. I'll hopefully be getting most or all of the hardware and Duratex for Christmas presents, and I may buy a 6NM410 in the next couple of days. So excited!

Thanks for your report! From reports here and on the fEARful forum it seems like standard polarity is the way to go for the mid driver (positive to positive). Verdict is still out about the tweeter, though, and seems to depend on the waveguide in use.

Apparently Duke and greenboy are working on a small mod to the highpass circuit which will allow the tweeter to go a little lower to fill in a dip at around 6kHz, too! I LOVE how this design is a work in progress, always improving!

Hey gang! Just catching up and it appears that the latest recommendation is to use standard polarity - not reverse - on the mid. Is this verified? Just wanted to make sure I am not misreading anything.

just a thought for anyone using a fEARful/contemplating building a fEARful....get on the fEARful forum for 1st hand info from Greenboy himself, its a great lil community for all things fEARful and great for related stuff too

No, not all inlaws are created equal.

Give your girlfriend's dad the plans, if he builds the cab, marry his little girl! If he just dispenses wisdom from on high about why the plans won't work: think things over long and hard. He could be your kid's gramps long after the wife is gone. Just saying, you can't divorce your inlaws.

Costs depend on how good a deal you can get on the drivers. Shop hard.

I built a 12/6 cube with the less expensive Alpha 6A mid for under $300. It's my go to, most used fEarful.

You can get a very good idea what your costs would be by going to speakerhardware.com and price out the deluxe kits. You would need to add lumber, finish, and a grill... Take the deluxe kit, add maybe 70 to 150 depending on lumber choice, and you'll be close..

Hmmm... a 12/6 build with the Alpha mid driver can turn out quite affordable, but if you plan on increasing the rig size at some point (adding a 12sub), it's worth getting the more powerful mid (18sound) straight away. A 12/6 (/1) + 12sub makes a very powerful rig that can be driven by practically any amp.

I spent more on my build than I planned (probably most people do). My 15/6/1 build cost me roughly 550 euros, but that includes some tools, extra electronics, the 18sound mid and tweeter and a few unused bits and bobs, mostly due to poor planning, but some due to drivers becoming unavailable from certain suppliers and changing my mind about the tweeter at a late stage.

I reckon budget around $500 for a 12/6/1 with eighteensound mid and good wood.

If anyone is looking for a padded cover for their fEARful, I heartily recommend Larry at LeCover. I sent him an order for my 15/6 AoN and took delivery a week later. He's easily accessible and personable and the price is fair. I have no affiliation with Larry, by the way.

I'm getting the cab out for a bar gig tomorrow and I'll be sure to post my impressions over the weekend. :bassist:
