fEARful part 13: the bad luck's done, son

And now, the completed USS Lonnybass, 2012 Edition. The second of the two cabinets was wired up over the weekend. Despite being significantly larger than a 2x10, the cabinets are lighter than any 2x10 I've owned.

Normally these will be stacked in a vertical plane for live use, but with a two-year old running around the house, the idea of a six and a half foot tall tower with a rack at the top makes me a little bit nervous!

The Duratex worked beautifully and there is plenty of nice deep cherry graining (hard to make out here) visible on the baffles.

After having lurked these threads, and having lusted after many a fEARful, I'm very close to taking the plunge and building my first 15/6. Found a good deal on a 3015LF and am very close to sealing the deal, which kickstarted things. I'm really looking forward to playing through a cab that won't gasp for air if I play my B string!

Very nice work! Love that wood grain. Looks great and I bet they sound even better.

So last week I took my fEARful and a few basses to my friend Patrick's house (TBer PDK) and we hung out for a few hours playing our basses through various rig combinations. He has a GB Shuttle 9.0, Genz 6x10 cab, and an Avatar 2x12 and a bunch of different basses. I brought my Presonus Studio Channel/Crown XLS 1000 rig with my Big Orange fEARful 15/6/1. It was great to get to hear all the cabs and different basses. The fEARful was super solid and Patrick said he loved the even high end and how full the cab sounds even at low volume. It sounded great with his fretless Jazz. The P with TI flats was really thumping too. It was a fun night spreading the fEARful gospel. :smug:;) I offered my cab for a gig anytime he wants it. It was a fun mini GTG. It takes hearing to believe all the hype, for sure.

Thanks! I am quite pleased at how they turned out. And let me tell you, hearing and feeling EVERYTHING that is happenin' is such a nice change from the all artificial mid bumps and lack of any real bottom end that seems to be prevalent in so many commercial cabinets. Pumping out nice clean huge sub-E notes during rehearsal the other night was joyous. The whole band sounded bigger.

My feelings exactly based on last Friday's band practice.

In other news, I've decided that my Aguilar AG500/GS212 will be relegated to backup duty. As such, the fEARful will become my main practice/gigging rig. So I contacted Larry at LeCover yesterday and placed an order for a padded poly cab cover. Should be here by next week. My bud gave me a 4 space head case for the iAmp, so I'm good to go. :hyper:

Well, I'm waist deep in it now. :D.

I bought one of JGR's cabs that he built from a flat pack kit and on of his 3015LF's. I sighed up on the fEARful forum. You all are gonna get sick of me.:p

Ordered a 15/6/1 cut kit and all the other parts from speakerhardware. Can't wait to get started building it.

Out of curiosity, what kinds of things have people done for finishes? There's Duratex, which you can do with custom colors and textures. There the cool cartoon collage thing from LowEnd88. There is fabric, I was thinking about denim or maybe something more exotic. Any other interesting ideas?

Is tuck and roll like the old Kustom cabs difficult or expensive? Or how about attaching shag carpeting to the cabinet?

I was toying with the idea of a glossy sparkle car paint finish similar to a bass or a 50's muscle car. Is there any way to make this durable enough for gigging?

Sure, do a clear top coat in urethane or epoxy. I posted about my experiments with metallic finishes a few threads back, IIRC. Ultimately, I decided I prefer the natural wood look to paint though.

I should like a fEARful stack in high gloss big-flake sparkle chartreuse and magenta. :)

But then, I tend to like stuff that's understated anyway.
