I was able to get my duratex on in the living room with a preggo wife that smells EVERYTHING. It wasn't bad at all. But the other coats mask most mistakes from the first one. I think the Duratex process was my favorite. It was the most change in the quickest amount of time. Once it was on, the thing REALLY started to look pro built.

ALSO....way old update from amp troubles I was having two weeks ago, but the Mesa 400 Strategy just got out of the shop. There was a tube that needed replacing. So I guess I was only getting one channel....? Is that how these work? But that would explain why I wasn't getting the volume I need. In any case, I've already got a Bass 400+ coming my way since I need to scale down to one cab. It's just nice knowing I'm shipping off a fully functional amp to whomever buys it.

Thanks for the help, guys.

When is she due? We're expecting on June 4th.

You're right about the effect of the duratex. After that, I knew I had a REAL. Cabinet!

Thought I'd stop in to say hi, subscribe to the thread, and announce my new fEARful build!

My dad's a carpenter by trade, so I figured this year would be the year to head home and start a build. Last weekend we put together a pair of 12/6 boxes to GB spec, no tweeter and baltic birch 1/2" plywood boxes. I just placed the order for speakers and everything else today, and working on painting them this week. Amazon was the cheapest I could find for the drivers.

As for the exterior, I was going to cover them in a protective carpet material, but I'm thinking of just painting flat black and having some local art school students paint designs on them, and doing a protective clearcoat over that. I didnt want to do straight black traditional tolex, looking to make these as one-of-a-kind as possible. Would of course add metal corner covers and rubber feet afterwards. I figure I could always tolex or duratex em if I see the finish wearing down later on, but I baby my equipment anyway.

Nice! Can't wait to see them :)

Re-reading my post, it sounds like I'm going to let children fingerpaint on them... not quite the case, just to clarify, my girlfriend is graduating from Art Institute of Pittsburgh this year, and I've seen the works that some of her friends have created.... really the most amazing pro quality designs and impressive works I've seen in awhile.

Fingerpainting is actually a very cool idea. Hmmm...

I built my first 12/6 (Alpha) a couple years ago "sight-unheard", based more on what I knew about greenboy than the TB hype.
Built the 2nd one just over a year ago...based on how much I liked the 1st.

Drop me a PM and maybe we can get together and compare notes/experiences sometime.

Definitely, I just put in my order for hardware and speakers today, so hopefully work on getting them painted and coated in the next few weeks while that stuff's trickling in. How much were the drivers when you made yours? Best I found was $230 per 12" and $50 per 6" on Amazon. At least I got $2.40 in gas perks from buying the gift cards first.

I think the 3012LF was around $150 when I built the first one. Alphas were $40, same as now. (+shipping, of course) Not sure what the drivers cost for the second cab. It was a special discount package deal from speakerhardware.com

I had about $350 in each cab. But...I cheaped out on several things (i.e. spray paint rather than Duratex ) and had some stuff on hand (i.e. screen for the grills).

Especially for what you get. I was sold on the 12/6 when I read it can nearly replace a 4x10 as far as volume and presence. And I plan on making $600 on the 4x10's that these are replacing... so yeah it was a no-brainer, I was just waiting for the weather to get warm.
