Where there is a will there’s a way. You can piss on a campfire too. I started this thread because there have been some very long threads about female bassists, and it just hit me that they were all good musicians, and being women did not mean their playing had a common link that could be heard in the music, and I feel the music is what should define a musician.

Guess I'm an anomaly, I've almost always played music with women, from when I started in '82. Have been employed by women musicians for over 25 years now. Never had a shortage of hard working, talented females (born and/ or identified) in my life.

The only need I see for the discussion would be to troll. In my time on TB I've not seen any post(s) (aside from OP) that have given any indication that gender/race/sexuality/anything mean anything to being a bass player other than skill (or tort pickguards)... It's a crass point to make in an area where there's really no need for it - unless there's a desire to be difficult for the sake of being difficult.

[Edited for stupid comment: feel free to read on.] The problem is that when somebody wants to spread the light, we often want to crush them because they are not as "enlightened" as we. Please do not crush them. Help them to grow so that we can have more people spreading the light rather than letting the darkness continue.

If you do not think there have been very long posts about female bassists, do a search. You can see for yourself. If such posts are no longer started, fine. As for making distinctions between musicians, there are times when it is relevant, and times when it is not. As for me trolling, I have been a member of TB for 15 years, and my record has been one of trying to share what I know, not trying to start arguments or stir up trouble. This thread was started in the spirit that bass is what we have in common, and that should be the focus.

I understand that you see it this way. I would hazard a dangerous guess that it has something to do with a long history and at least some of it painful. The problem is that when somebody wants to spread the light, we often want to crush them because they are not as "enlightened" as we. Please do not crush them. Help them to grow so that we can have more people spreading the light rather than letting the darkness continue.

Self righteousness is to be avoided like the plague because we all have blind spots and insensitivities. We all have dealt with issues that others have not had to confront.

If you do not think there have been very long posts about female bassists, do a search. You can see for yourself. If such posts are no longer started, fine. As for making distinctions between musicians, there are times when it is relevant, and times when it is not. As for me trolling, I have been a member of TB for 15 years, and my record has been one of trying to share what I know, not trying to start arguments or stir up trouble. This thread was started in the spirit that bass is what we have in common, and that should be the focus.

I've misinterpreted your intent - and I'm sorry I haven't taken/read it in the spirit intended.

Edit: Almost all the bassists in my top 10 are of a different (geographical) race to me, I'd really hope if I met them we could have a beer/coffee/nice cool glass of water and talk about bass-stuff.

You should've kept the comment - everyone's had painful times in their lives, I really don't think mine are significant, certainly not in the grand scheme of things. I'm doubtful my comments have crushed anyone - it's only words on the internet, the OP did annoy me a touch, but... I'm still in bed on a Sunday afternoon with a nice coffee... My experience of light Vs darkness is mostly centred on my reading about the Galactic Federtation of Light (I don't take it seriously), so maybe you could contextualise that if it's not about GFL.

The only reason I can see that there might be fewer female bassists is maybe because of the size of the instrument might make it more difficult to play, especially on upright bass. But, there are many fine female bassists that I don't even think about it. A good musician is a good musician.

I understand. Sorry that I've gotten so opinionated...and a bit dumb. I think we're all on the same page. The good Dr. is a bit on the old-school line when it comes to threads like these but I think we all are more interested in the advancement of bassists regardless of their gender/identity.

These threads can touch a nerve right quick though.

We know different women because I can testify otherwise...

The only reason I can see that there might be fewer female bassists is maybe because of the size of the instrument might make it more difficult to play, especially on upright bass. But, there are many fine female bassists that I don't even think about it. A good musician is a good musician.

Don't forget all that social stigma they have to overcome. Very few genres are openly accepting of women. Heck, even here on TB we have multiple threads reducing women to visual objects to be consumed for our pleasure. But it is flattering to say how "hot" all these "singer/bass babes" are, right? They should appreciate the attention.

Female boss, female pilot, female politician, female cop, female bass player. In most cases, adding “female” describes more the one speaking than the subject spoken about. And what it describes isn’t good.

I looked at your profile. You joined about fifteen months ago and have posted less than 400 times. I joined fifteen years ago, and have posted nearly 35,000 times. I think it is fair to say I have seen things on this board that you have not in any number of areas.

I think where bassists come from, and the culture they were raised in can affect how they play. That is a way I differentiate bassists on occasion.

Doesn't make a difference to me.

I'm used to see female players because my education is in classical music.

There is a lot of talent out there, male or female.


What I do notice, and I am sure I'm gonna get some furious replies, is that some female youtubers don't need to show up in the videos almost in their underwear, but I guess that helps with the likes. If you want to get comments about your music and not get comments about your body, don't dress like you are on the beach.
