Fender 1966 Jazz Bass

Thank you. Every time I open the case and get a whiff of old nitro I have to smile.

I played one at GC. Unfortunately there was way too much relief and the action might have been 3x factory spec. So it didn’t play well or sound good. I have no doubt that a setup would make a big difference but I didnt get a good impression of it.

The slightly greater than medium C neck profile, smooth non reverse tuners, and binding were highlights. The shade of green was awful. I wanted to like it.

This is the first I have heard of them.
Check them out. Ed Friedland has been touring with them recently which is a pretty good endorsement. Vintage spec'd basses with some modern touches like roasted necks. The design is nice too with the bound necks and matching headstocks. Apparently they are very high quality but I have not yet tried them. I'm not sure how available they are where you are but they do have a shop here in Canada that I have been meaning to get to.

I think Fender is on to something with the American Vintage II Series. I picked up a '54P that is really amazing to play. The Bass Shop here in Seattle had the '66J around when I bought my P, but I never tried it out. Didn't last very long. If the playability of the '66J is as anywhere near my '54P, I bet it's a fabulous bass. Doc, I doubt you'd go wrong with it.
