Fender '70s Precision Bass

I'm open minded, and it has been a while since I played some MIMs. I know prior to 2008 I would have never considered buying any Fender NEW, but out of all the basses I've went thru since getting back into music in '06, the only ones I've paid "new" money for have been my '08 MIA jazz and my 70s P. They're worth every penny.

As soon as I saw this MIJ P bass I just had to have it.I tried a MIM P bass in store as well but I left with the MIJ for all the right reasons and only $300 NZ extra than the MIM equivalent.Retail in NZ $1699 with discount I paid $1300.
Bargin !
I have played a MIA Jazz for over a decade and have not touched it since I got the MIJ P Bass and what a gorgeous neck it has.

I had one tiny little gripe about the MIJ P Bass, I found the frets rather sharp at the edge of the fret board compared to the MIA Jazz, and quite a square edge as opposed to the more rounded Jazz.Anyone else notice this ?
Still its now my main player, love the tone.

I'll have to compare mine tomorrow, I'm at work at the moment, to my MIA jazz.

Seems that nearly all of the Classic Series '70s basses from online retailers are now MIM...and the comments on those are very favorable. I count myself lucky as a beginning bassist to have found a killer deal on these fraternal twins. Both are MIJ and both play like a dream on first impression. YMMV, pleasemremember that I am a NOOB.

I'm sure they DO play wonderfully. I'm blessed to be able to spoil myself w/ US Laklands (most have been used though btw) and my MIJ 70s P is just as easy to play and will definitely see just as many gigs. I hope the MIMs are equal to the MIJs.

I hope the MIMs are equal to the MIJs.

They are equal, going by the two that I sampled. This bass is the first new Fender product to ever give me gas. I love the early '70s logo, the black blocks & binding with the black pickguard and the tinted neck is a nice touch. I had the chance to play both in stores, a sunburst MIJ and a white MIM, and I bought the MIM. The only cosmetic difference between them was the MIM did not have the "F" on the neck plate. I didn't hear any difference in tone but the MIM pots have a nicer feel. Both were fairly light as P-basses go but the MIJ was neck-heavy and that's a deal breaker for me. The MIM is well balanced. The fit and finish is very good and superior to other basses at that price point.

I've had it for about a month and I'm very happy with it. The neck profile is perfect for me and I even like the factory strings! Wish I knew what the strings where, the web site just says they are NPS. They don't have colored ends like the Fender strings do.

I just ordered an Olympic White. It should be here this week. I've always been a J-Bass player when it comes to Fender, but when I saw that 70's P-Bass I had to have it. It's my first P-Bass and I can't wait.

BTW JEDI BASS, the black hardware on yours looks sick! I love it. I will try very hard not to copy you, but I can't guarantee that I won't. :D

Copy if you want :-) after all, I copied the look from somebody also.

Just jammed w/ mine in a new band yesterday and even though I'm typically a stainless roundwound non-P player, I love the flatwounds/P bass combo. And this bass' neck is buttah!

Hey Pinz - nice bass's, nice to see another in NZ with such good taste ;) bought mine into the country and wondered who bought the ones that were already here, I figured we could do with more of these in NZ, I haven't noticed any sharp edges on the fret board and have to say this would be the fastest/nicest neck to play of all my bass's, I have an 01 MIM P and that is close (still sweet as to play) but not as smooth as the MIJ 70's, the biggest difference between my MIJ and MIM after the neck would be the sound, the 70's has sweet sounding pickups and no doubt they are in the MIM 70's as well. My MIJ 70's would be my lightest bass which is a bonus.

Those Fender nickels do sound good, haven't changed mine yet, what strings are proving popular on these anyone ?

Pics of mine - before I removed the protective plastic from the pic guard, yes it looks much better now I have done that but I haven't taken decent pics since then, right now I have no changes planned for this bass as it is just so good as they made it.

I also have an MIJ P bass. Bought it a few months ago and I too can't stop playing it. The neck is perfect!

Question: to those who also have this bass, what's the weight of yours like? Mine is a very comfortable 8 pounds which is great for my old, aching back.
