Thanks, Chuck, but it's more like a revolving door than a stable. ;) The only one there I still own is my first-ever. The Non-Exports certainly were pretty, but they didn't feel as good in my hands as my Export does. Lots of "intangibles" at work, I guess.

I will buy any stripped down Aerodyne body you all have. I put this one together and love it. Also looking for a Jaguar body to do the same. A Pawn shop Jaguar reverse is high on the list as well.

Ever considered taking it all the way and having the headstock painted to match? That'd be B-2 bomber levels of stealthy!

"Measure twice...cut once." If you're close enough, no one will notice from a distance. I say, go for it! Just be sure to wear a respirator or some kind of mask. You do not want to breathe in any loose fibers.

I usually consult The Stratosphere to see what brand-new bodies go for, then adjust the price based upon the condition, but that's just me, though.

I paid $220 for my bare Aerodyne body. Other than the Aerodyne, I've built (pieced together) five fretless Jazz basses and one PJ and never spent more than $300 for a body. Necks are a different story, I've spent up to $350 for a used unlined fretless neck and even $500 for a brand new unlined Maple fingerboard neck. If you look at Reverb you can find bodies in the $350 range all day long but these are the common Jazz and Precision types.

Oh hey, there's an Aerodyne club.

I've never been a fan of Fender-shaped basses because the aesthetics don't work for me, but my instructor has been light-heartedly nagging me about getting a P-bass for a long time. After the last conversation I asked Google about lightweight P-basses, came across the Aerodyne, and decided that I needed one. A lot more searching and reading convinced me that I wanted a non-export model because I don't like black, and that I wanted either blue or grey. I eventually gave up on finding what I wanted used and ordered from Japan on Ebay. I'm really quite happy with it! It's kind of the perfect workhorse, solid but not flashy. And yes, I know it's technically a jazz bass but the P-bass pickup makes it close enough and I prefer the jazz neck.

My one question: Is there a good source for third-party pickguards? The blue is pretty dark and I'd like to lighten it visually.

I put the EMG Ivory set on mine in an attempt to match the binding.

Nice! Love the Geezers, they sound great.

I’m also rediscovering what a fantastic playing bass the Aerodyne is. Our covers band is working up All Right Now by Free, and there’s a quick 17-fret jump that’s pretty challenging. I’m finding that it’s easier to nail that lick on the Dyne than any of my other basses, including my dream bass, a Fodera that is also a great playing bass. I think it’s because of the combination of the smaller radius on the Dyne and the 24-fret Fodera neck making it easier to overshoot that jump. The tone is great on both ends of the neck. Talk about bang for the buck!

Yeah they are awesome! the one thing I am noticing though is the volume output is about 20-25% lower with both pups on 100%. Honestly quiter than the P alone and not much louder than full J, no P. DO they cancel each other out a bit? Some sort of internal limiter to keep them from pushing too hard? I have found myself mainly playing at 100% P, 75-80% J. Loads of sound and a snarling tone.

That "cancellation" happens on the Fender Jazz bass, too. (I read it on the Interwebs, so it must be true!)

Yeah, that P pickup is ballsy! I do think its highest output is P pickup FFB, J ~75-80%, as you are finding, although with mine it’s more subtle, like maybe 10% quieter with both dimed. I can’t explain it, but I’ve noticed it too, to a slighter degree.
