This is where somebody chimes in about non-export models, isn't it?
I mean, there is a higher concentration of non-export aeros in this place...
I've told this story before, but I can't remember how long ago and it bears repeating...
Back in 2011, right after my first-ever bass was delivered to me, I took it to a local, mom & pop store for a technical inspection...or what I soon came to learn what was called a "setup and restringing". As I was getting closer and closer to the entrance, I started getting very self-conscious, wondering if I'd just dropped almost four-hundred bucks on an instrument that'd make me look like a chump or a poser in the eyes of other musicians. Mere seconds after I walked in, one of the employees stopped in his tracks, asked out loud, "An Aerodyne?!". I nodded to the affirmative and he exclaims, "Cool!". That took a load off my mind.
A week later, I took it with me to a nearby Guitar Center to buy some accessories and a headphone amp. While not as nervous as the first time, I was still a bit on edge while walking in. But, in a weird echo of the previous week, before I made it five feet past the entrance, an employee ground to a halt and stated out loud, "Is that an Aerodyne?! Sweet!"
So, yeah...after all that, what I chose held an almost legendary status.

What I really need to do is drag it out for another round of pics. This one deserves more and better photos, especially since I've gotten the hang of my camera and the environment I use for my sessions.

If I'd seen that happen time and again, I'd totally believe that, having worked enough retail myself. But in the case of my local Guitar Center, I spent enough time with those cats that I could tell when they were being genuine. Plus, that was when Aerodynes weren't very common at that store, so it's quite possible he'd only seen them in pictures and catalogs.
Nowadays, there's rarely a time they don't have one on the wall, which is good should I feel like shilling for them while I'm noodling around with their current crop o' basses. I may not work there, but with all my retail experience, combined with a lot of lessons I've learned here on TB, I can't resist helping out when a young'un and their parents are obviously looking for a first-ever. What's even better is the GC manager actually encourages me to do it...free help from an informed source who knows how to talk to potential customers and all that, I guess.

Oh, I feel so sorry for you. Here, let me store a couple of those non-export 'Dynes for you. Let's see, I'll take the Dolphin Gray one, maybe the red one, a black one, maybe ...

I hate to break it to you, though, but you missed your chance at the Non-Exports by a year or more. As for my Export model, well..."cold, dead hands" and all that jazz.
Yeah, keeping mine, too. Something about that look -- "The Man In Black" of e-basses.
Although I'm still unsure about the neck on mine -- has a little ski-jump they tell me. If you're ever throwing away a perfectly flat Aerodyne neck, I'd pay the shipping to take it off your hands -- you know, helping a pal clean up his shop and all... ;->
I put a Warmoth Jazz neck on mine! It's fretless but they do make fretted necks.
Yeah, if a Warmoth neck will fit a 'dyne, then you have lots of options. You could get a brand new Fender neck, or one from Mighty Mite or Allparts. [This invalid link has been removed] is one place you could poke around to see some of what's available.
I've had good results using aftermarket necks from Warmoth, Fender, and Mighty Mite.
Of course is your "ski jump" isn't that noticeable to you when you play it.... rock on.

Yeah, I've been watching Stratosphere (when I can force myself to wade through their terrible search facilities) but I'm not finding much in dot-less rosewood in Jazz width with painted black headstock. Would ya think any of the other 4 places would offer it without dots and already painted?
By "dotless" do you mean a fretless neck or do you mean "inlays instead of dots"?
Since he wants a replacement neck for an Aerodyne, I’m guessing he means neither, but a neck without dot markers on the fretboard.
