Fender Aerodyne Club!

I or a new II?
I *think* the black is a II , Verdine a I—he dates from 2010.
I need to do a bit more "overseas research" (Look out, Ishibashi...here I come! :bookworm:), but one thing I do know is the Aerodyne II didn't see the light of day until 2015, when FMIC took over the show out in Japan.

Two things I can say for sure about the II's, the body wood seems to have switched to alder and they started flattening out the fretboards to a 9.5" radius. That means no more lighter-than-normal basses and bye-bye to the neck profile that many players have come to love since the 'Dyne's unveiling.

Oh, and did I mention they initially made an FSR model that lacks a painted headstock?! o_O

productimg

I can understand FMIC feeling the need to make them fall more in line with more conventional Fender specifications, but that FSR just effin' baffles me. "Standardization" is one thing, but taking away a big, visual twist that makes the Aerodyne stand out from the crowd just screams "unnecessary homogenization" to me. :vomit: I mean, sure...it's just an FSR model, so it's probably not going to last, and it's probably meant to echo the "Classic Fender Jazz" look, but really, now...what soulless, white-bread-with-mayonaise-craving, empty suit would go out of their way to make the Almighty 'Dyne look less cool?! I just do not get it!

But then, perhaps...

Big picture, I have to wonder if FMIC taking over from Kanda-Shokai will be looked back through the same veil of history as CBS buying Fender...a period of questionable creative changes that may or may not be seen as something of a "dark age" for the brand and the company.
[/RANT]

Ranting aside, sifting through the Ishibashi site is definitely rekindling my interest in the Fender MIJ Modern Jazz bass, which has the looks and specs of a lovechild between an Aerodyne and a Fender American Deluxe. (Is it a forbidden romance or would the World accept their love?! <cue cheesy soap opera music>) For sure, I'd make some minor, cosmetic changes, but I'm gonna put a pin in that discussion until owning one is a realistic possibility.

The Aerodyne has a PJ configuration, that means a Volume for the P + Volume for the J + general master tone, that being said, and since you dont seem to be very comfortable about selectin pots, you could get some great quality pre-wired J bass electronics, the J bass has the same features 2 pickup volumes and a master tone.
I went with a Mojotone prewired for my PJ, great stuff. Hope it helped, any question just ask.

New to such things, so could you tell me what the configuration of those 3 controls are, please? Ie which are volume, jass and precision tones? Thanks...
Near to joining you Aerodynamic monsters soon...

The controls are the regular Jazz or PJ controls, Volume for the front/neck pickup, volume for the bridge pickups and master tone. They both work with a regular PJ or a J since they both have 2 pickups and a master tone.
Hope it helped any question just ask.

Semi-Related question. My pre-owned bass came with EMG GZRs already installed. When both volumes are at 100%, there is a significant reduction in output. Rolling the J back 20-25% is much louder. IS there some sort of safety limiter at play here, or are the pickups canceling each other out a little bit somehow?

Usually, with all the PJ basses I had and played I saw that happen all the time, to the point of thinking that is how they work... The P ends up being much louder when the J volume is off. I would not worry about it, that is how 99% of the regular PJ works.
Even if there is a way to fix that, I don't think it matters or that it is a problem.
Btw the Geezers are amazing, I bet they sound great with the Aero, have fun with them!

A Jazz bass has 2 pickups, and Google told me that when both are at 100%, some kind of cancelling occurs. I would not be surprised to see the same occur on a P/J bass. Consider searching the question on Jazz basses and see what you learn...

Not sure if you are LMGTFYing a new member or not, but this is your second seemingly passive aggressive comment. I started by asking a fellow member a question about a specific pickup being used on an Aerodyne in the Aerodyne club. I asked a more general question to someone who seemed kind to another newcomer. I saw the stickied thread about the defective Js. There is no hum. Enjoy your day!

(Sigh.) I don't know what's LMGTFYing but sorry if my honest attempt at helping was offensive. None intended. I am just too busy right now to go Google it for folks.

I know I was happy to learn it, and try to share here on TB, to pay back. (OK, full disclosure, sometimes it's nice to be the guy giving advice instead of getting it -- helps the ego, ya-know?) But yeah, back in the 70's, my ears told me that my Jazz got louder when I turned down either of the pickups from full on. How could that be? Fast forward to 2019 when I stumbled across the reason. Gonna look for it on my Aerodyne next time I think about it.

Sorry if the advice was unwanted and came across as offensive. Good luck finding better answers to your question. I'll butt out. Sorry...

Are we still assigning Numbers in this club? If so I would like one. Picked this up about 6 weeks ago View attachment 4722940 used at GC used for about 25% less than the new one and it already had the EMG GZR pickups installed.

May I have #181 please?

How well-known is the Aerodyne? Last week I showed up for my (zoom) lesson with the new Aerodyne, but I'd covered the markings on the headstock with gaffer tape ... I was curious to see if he'd recognize it. As expected his first question was, "What is that?!" (This? It's a bass guitar, sir.) "Let me see that. It looks like a Fender? It's a PJ. White edge. That's an Aerodyne, isn't it? I've always wanted to play one. Is it light? Do you like it?"

Thank You! I started reading this thread from the first pages where Numbers was a thing. Glad to see I could ressurect the tradition. Don't tell anyone, but I skipped from page 30 or so to page 140, LOL

****** "Let Me Google That For You" is a website that you can link to and it "Googles" it for you. Pretty irreverant, and it seemed to be what you were (as it turns out) politely implying. I am quite busy myself and this site isn't always the best to navigate from within. I have been smart enough to NOT ask if I should buy a random 1x15 cab to go under my Carvin BRX 10.2 to provide more low end. (I really wanted to buy one). Based on the overwhelming advice on this site I stood it up vertically, and found another used one which should arrive tommorow. So I can then make a 4x10 the hard (best?) way.

I appreciate your earnest response here and I am sorry that I took what you said the wrong way. I feel more welcome again and shall now go grave dig some 5-10 year old threads about my Carvin FS-22 footswitch, as I googled the heck out of it and it mainly just confirmed that this site has been around a long time.
