Does anyone have (or played) both a CIJ Aero PJ and an Aero J? I’d been looking at buying a CIJ Aero PJ (all black), but ended up getting a new MIJ Dolphin J, which I love. Just curious on how these two compare…especially the sound of the Jazz neck pu, vs. the split-P neck pu on the PJ.

I haven't tried one, yet, but I'm gonna say the big difference will be in the neck. I, for one, am not a big fan of such polar opposites, but as a die-hard Aerodyne researcher, it behooves me to sample as many as possible for myself.
Ok so both of these pics are great, but that first shot where it's picking up all the purple from the lights is simply AWESOME!
While not quite the same, I love what the purple lighting did to the parts bass I made in this pic:
That's just an alder warmoth body with a Caribbean burst finish (natural with a green to blue burst around the rim) but the lighting puts that nice purple over all of it. Now I wish it looked like that all the time!
You are totally right. Between the J and the P, these 'dynes cover a LOT of sonic ground!
I know CIJ Aero PJ necks were 7.5” radius and newer MIJ Aero J’s are 12”…a big difference. But as owner of a 1960 vintage Jazz and a ‘89 Kubicki (w/ 7.25” and 7.5” necks), I am surprised how much I like the 12”…no issues whatsoever.
More interested in whether I’m missing much, in not having the split-P pu in my Aero. The Jazz neck sounds fine, just never played/heard an Aero P split pu.
Before these models hit the bargain bin, I was always interested in the black pj, thinking it would cover the most ground in my cover bands. Looking back to when I've played them over the years, I recall the P pickup being fairly hot. Not sure if it's a similarly spec'ed pickup as the current Aero P as they're both quite hot and set high from the factory. The J pickup at the bridge added a little zing, but felt weaker than the P overall and added some single coil buzz I found annoying. I probably would've just used the P pickup soloed most of the time, if not looked into a noiseless single coil to try to swap in to the bridge. This experience mirrors my general outlook on a PJ setup though, as feeling like something of a compromise.
I also owned one of these bad boys for about a year. The Sire U5 being basically a short scale Aerodyne, I loved the sound and feel of the instrument, but didn't like how tiny it looked on my frame. I remember the J pickup being quieter than the Aerodynes I had tried before, but it still wasn't noiseless. I would love to see Fender drop the classic Aerodyne PJ setup in some fun colors like this. These Sires actually came before the redesign of the Fender Aerodyne series iirc
From what I remember, the consensus on the Aerodyne P/J's was something like, "using the P-pup to do the heavy lifting and the J-pup + tone control for accent and nuance".
More than a few people would take it a step further and replace the pickups and possibly the controls, too. That seemed to be the case the more someone used the J-pup as the lead pickup. Either way, I think it's fair to say a good 20%...give or take a couple of points...of used Aerodynes P/J's have aftermarket pickups. At least, that seems to be what I've seen within the used market. I'd be curious to know what other people's experiences are.
Yep, that tracks. The last Aerodyne I sold...an Export-Edition, Dolphin Grey P/J...was armed exactly the same way, with a Fender Hi-Mass bridge to boot.

Honestly, I really, REALLY don't think they made those, now or ever. To the best of my research, the only five-string Aerodyne ever made was a Non-Export AJB-V (Aerodyne Jazz Bass-V) in the classic gloss black with binding. But, like with any scientific research project, I yearn to be proved wrong.
EDIT TO THE LAST POST; There is a somewhat recent model that seems to be a hybrid of several Japanese and American Fenders...the Fender Made In Japan Modern Jazz Bass. It has the arch-top of an Aerodyne and the preamp, bridge and compound neck radius of various MIA Standard/Deluxe Fenders. It is, also, available as fours and fivers.
As much as I love the Deep Ocean Metallic color, if I were to ever score a used one (that's right...they're already discontinued!
), I would probably go for the Jasper Olive Metallic. I miss my MIA Standard's Jade Pearl Metallic finish and the Jasper is pretty damn close. (...after some minor mods to make it look more like my MIA Standard, of course!

If someone could do me a kindness could they record an audio clip of their P Bass tone knob in action? I can hear a change as I swing the knob to the other extreme, it’s just not dramatic.
