A little late to the conversation here but I have the MIJ Export Aerodyne Jazz bass (P/J configuration with a jazz body & neck)
It was my first bass over 12 years ago and I still play it regularly. I have replaced the pup's with DiMarzio's and done a bunch of shielding; but its a great bass and gets lots of compliments from anyone else who plays it.
The weak spot on this bass for me is the bridge, but I havent done anything about it becase the bridge is recessed into a pocket milled in the body.

From what I understand, Hipshot will actually create a bridge that will fit into the routed area on the bass. Its a custom-order thing. I started to go down this path, but eventually decided the bridge was fine after all...
I believe that is correct. Hipshot also makes an excellent drop-d for these basses that looks like it came from the factory that way. Great company.
Thanks, I may look into that at some point. I'm happy with the tone as is, but the saddles seem to walk on the machine screws that adjust the scale length.
I had bought one bridge from one of the major online vendors and they said it fit "All Fender Jazz Basses".... not so much an Aerodyne with the recessed bridge pocket.
I wasn't about to take a router to that gorgeous lacquer body and didnt like the idea of shimming the bridge.
I have the Hipshot drop tuners on most of my gigging basses. It's the only mod required on a Aerodyne, IMHO...
No extra holes required, it's a direct bolt-on replacement.

Hi! I got the cherry Aerodyne yesterday. I love the neck and the body looks incredible. How long did it take for you to get used to the sharp edge? Also, can I get a #?

The bound edges become un-noticable amongst the dreamy goodness of the sonic wall that bass will produce. Lol.
Picked up a used 2003 Aerodyne Non-Export Jazz this past Monday. I haven't had enough time with this bass yet, but every time I pick it up I'm continually impressed. Hoping this is the last bass for a long time (for real this time (sure about that?)). Seriously loving the sound and playability!
Does hipshot make them in a smoked chrome color that matches the stock hardware? When I was shopping for detuners all I could find was chrome, gold, and black. Opted for black because that doesn't bother me as much as slightly mismatched chromes would've
I have never seen a Hipshot in that color. Shoot them a note. They are very very responsive.
Not as a stock tuner. Also, their black hardware has a matte finish, not glossy, so I went with a chrome BT10. Honestly, though it may be noticeable when you look up close at the back of the headstock, you'd hardly ever notice it from just about any other angle. For example…

It's quite possible that the matte finish would stand out even more than the other, super-glossy tuners. So, unless you're really, really OCD about the whole thing, I'd recommend going with the Chrome.
My Aerodyne is a USA market AKA - Export model from circa 2004/5.
Neck width at the nut: 1 1/2"
Thickness of neck just before the first fret: just a shade over 13/16"
12th fret: 2 1/4" wide, 1" thick
Body joint: 2 5/16" wide, just a shade under 1 1/32" thick.
Neck thickness measurements taken on the nut side of the fret, from the back to the surface of the rosewood. Except for the body dimension - that was on the bridge side of the 15th fret.
Keep us posted, I've been tempted to buy a used Aerodyne body off ebay to mod sometime, but I don't want to take a router to my baby incase it doesn't work out.
Dead serious question…how would you feel about going half-and-half on a used Aerodyne? As in, you keep the body and I keep the neck. And if this idea grabs you, would it necessarily have to be an Export Edition?
Mine arrived last week. If you're still giving out numbers, I'd love one that ended in 59.
What year, or at the very least, what are the designations? "Made" or "Crafted" In Japan? A "JD" serial number?
I ask because there's a difference between the neck finishes. Mine, which I'm pretty sure was built somewhere around 2007, has what can be best described as a "semi-gloss" finish. The recently built ones I've noodled with at my local Guitar Center, ones with the "JD16" serial numbers, have such a rough, bone-dry feeling finish that I found them a little unpleasant to the touch. Even a number of Squiers I've sampled, ones with satin finished necks, didn't have such an overabundance of texture to them.
Aerodyne necks are easily one of my favorites amongst all of Fender's offerings, so this change kinda irks me a bit.
Oh, how I pine for the glorious Fender/Kanda-Shokai days. They really knew how to innovate and dazzle with their creations. At least FMIC was smart enough to keep the Aerodyne in production. I'll curse the day they announce it's discontinuation, whenever that may be.
