Fender American Professional II Series

Got a brand new one before the price hike from a big online music retailer (water in the name) and the thing arrived with marks, superficial scratches and a gap in the neck pocket. QC for Fender lately has been horrible. Sent it back and now they've jacked the price so dunno when I'll ever get one at this point.

I got my (used) 2019 Am. Pro. II Jazz (Sonic Gray) a couple months ago. I love the look and feel, but the jury is still out on the V-Mod pickups. I don't DISlike them, but they don't blow me away, either. I have an old set of Nordstrand NJ-4s sitting around. I was gonna swap them out last week, but then all of a sudden the V-Mods started sounding pretty good to me. :D So I'm gonna give them a little more time.

Maybe I'll try something else eventually. Oh, I did switch out the pickguard for an Aged White Pearl.

I got an AmProII Jazz Bass for Xmas from GC and was prepared to hate the V-Mods. They are on the brighter side of the spectrum to my ears, but they're ok. More than ok, I think I'm going to keep them.

I got a brand new one from GC online for Xmas. It was really wonky so I took it to 2 different stores and saw 3 more AmProIIs. All had one problem or another so I kept the one I had and took it to my luthier for a full setup. It's great now (I still have some doubts about the neck cavity) but I agree the QC sure seems like it could be improved.

I absolutely love my Am Pro II Precision. It’s not perfect (finish on the fingerboard rolled-edges is not great for an american made instrument, but it doesn’t impact playability), but it plays great, sounds great, and looks great. Now the price increase is ridiculous, glad I bought mine last summer.
Granted, I swapped the pickup for a Delano PC4 AL, but it did sound good with the stock pickup too. Just didn’t like the two-types of Alnico design.

I love pretty much everything about my AmPro 2 P except the narrow tall frets and the pickups. I'm a P guy and to be honest my American Performer Jazz bass sounds and feels way better than the AmPro 2. Maybe I would feel differently about the frets if it came with a P neck instead of the Jazz neck that is on it. I kept it because I figure with the 75th Anniversary logo and it being a mistake it will be worth money someday. I am really impressed with my player series P though.

How is it improvement over the Pro I?
Better weight and balance. Everyone I tried weighed less than the original Pro series. The pickups sound better to my ears, I find it is more even sounding than the I’s. I had 3 of the I’s and while they were nice I was never completely happy with the pickups. The II still sounds like a p-bass with good articulation but with out the D and G strings sounding radically different than the E and A strings. The newer model still has the beautiful neck which I find comfortable. That has been the nicest thing about both series.

The kings new clothes?

Looking at it from a purely marketing point of view what can Fender actually do to make an ‘improved’ Pro? Maybe better quality and finish? Seems the reported differences are marginal or maybe subjective at best.
Be interesting to see what benefits are going to be claimed for Pro lll :)

So I just recently fixed all my issues with my pro 2 got the action real good etc. after playing with the stock pickups for two years i decided it was time for them to go. I replaced them with a nordstrand np4a. This really helped get rid of the highs that the other pickup had. No more ice pick fully opened on the tone. Now this lives in d standard with thicker gauges and sounds amazing one of my go to basses. If my old band ever gets together again I’ll be set to play using this

Anyone looking to replace the pickup in this bass try this first before you do. Replace the volume and tone pot. After replacing the pickup the bass sounded good through a amp but the second it went into the computer it was muddy as all hell and distorted very easily. After making a new volume tone with using a normal cap everything even out and brought this to life. After this I tired the normal pickup in a different bass and it sounded really good it took out the highs and sounds very flat and mixes way easier the v mod II pickup is actually pretty good compared to the older line of pickups just needed some different wiring to make it less ice picky sounds.
