Fender American Vintage '63 Precision Bass Appreciation Thread

Here's mine I bought brand new in March 2018, date stamped July 13, 2017. One of the guitar players in my band helped me score a great deal on it through a buddy of his that works for Guitar Center. It was one of the last few they had in stock. I've played several hundred gigs and a handful of recording sessions with it from its purchase until I scored an even sweeter deal on a closet queen '66 Mustang this past July. It may no longer be my #1, but it's the best Precision I've had and I'll never let it go. My only complaint about this bass is I wish the rosewood board was darker!

As I wrote above, I own 3 AVS basses. Two have very dark rosewood, one has a much lighter board. But I get used to it...
What they all seem to have in common: I haven't heard of a single boat-anchor so far. All 3 of mine are lightweight.

Typo - no, they did offer them for awhile but not in a while. PV74 can still be found for $109.99 as can Fender Original Jazz Bass sets. FCS '60s and FCS '62 J sets (for near $200 set) but no PV64 to be had. The PV74's sound very good, (I have them in a J) but the PV64's have a cult following and I want a piece of it. :bored: :)

I get you 100%. My two '64 basses are my main instruments since 6 years or so. Played every gig with the Daphne '64 since I bought it in 2014.

As I said, I use the PV74's and the bass sounds great. I want eventually get a set of the PV64's just to see if it's real or hype. I've use the bass with the PV74's in every possible situation so I stone-cold know what they sound like. I want to install the PV64's and instantly hear a difference. (and a good difference!) If not - it's just marketing hype. As in; "Geddy Lee J" compared to a '70's (spec) Jazz bass - adding "Geddy Lee " makes it sooo much more desirable. (no offense to GL J owners... I've heard they are very nice basses)

I see the darker boards on yours and I'm jealous. I like those '60s boards so dark they look like ebony. It's true the side dots are invisible when you need them. I use a whiteout pen and so far it hasn't seemed to damage the finish. Mine's pretty light as well, roughly 8.5 lbs. The only lighter p-bass I've had was a Japanese PB-62 made of basswood.

They are my favorite Jazz bass pickups...in my Flea...But I have not compared them to other pickups in the Flea...Only against other Jazz basses...CS60s and VMOD.....PV64s win..or Flea wins

I'll continue my search until It find a set. I did briefly play the Road-Worn J that has them (in a music store) and I liked it but had nothing to compare it to.

They have become incredibly hard to find. Being that they were only made for about four years and they have a reputation for being amazing basses, my guess is that the few people out there that own them (myself included) will hold onto them forever.

Since mine is the rarer Olympic White, I’ll certainly never part with it. Well….until going prices start getting astronomically high anyway :cool:
