Fender Bassman 100T - chapter 2

Its not going to matter which speaker is on which jack, they are just parallel. Its combined load that matters. Cool they say its ok to run 2.6 on 4 ohm mode. For 5.4 then they probably suggest the 8 ohm setting?

Super versatile, great sounding amp.
 
That is typically the case pickles, couldn't agree more. But the amp will not power any cab unless there is a cab connected to the main speaker output. In other words, connect a speaker to the external speaker output, and you get no sound. The manual offers no spec or suggestion for running a 5.4 ohm cab at all.
 
By that I mean to the external speaker alone without a speaker connected to the main speaker output, you get no sound. And the manual says always connect a speaker to the main speaker output unless the amp is in standby or in silent record mode . I'm thinking this thing is wired a bit differently insofar as speaker loads are concerned than the typical parallel wiring scheme?

Thats odd -- maybe im wrong then? Trust the manual.
 
Go figure...the image in my post is straight outta the manual. Odd /fractional speaker load impedances are kinda strange to me... I have always avoided them and most manufacturers are fairly specific. It would be good to hear some different opinions on the topic.

All I can think of is many years ago when I first started playing we'd just grab a Fender or any other tube head and plug in a cab without worrying about ohms. Just always made sure we had a cab connected before coming off standby.

Most of those amps were pretty forgiving considering the amount of abuse we put the through. I can guarantee there were impedance mismatches going on from time to time. LOL

Thankfully things are better now and we are more tech savvy. So are the manufacturers.
 
No doubt man, same here. But those were the good old days of blissful ignorance...I think that maybe because there were really only a few major manufacturers producing 90% of the cabs, maybe it was a safer bet.

Also seems to me that I remember (and I don't claim to remember much) that there were only a few bass cabs around that were < 8 ohms...

Now I am more careful with my gear, though I don't baby it, I don't abuse it quite as badly as I used to back in the day.
 
I have always understood that with tube amps the situation is opposite to transistor amps. That is, with tube amps it is safer to run at a lower impedance, rather than higher as with solid state. In other words, if you have a 2.6 ohms speaker load you should set the amp at 4 ohms rather than two. Hence, the diagram in the manual is correct.

Funny how the manual can be correct.
 
I remember reading that with tube amps you set to the higher impedance in situations like that. Sort of the opposite from solid state. Might be hearsay, but te 100t owners manual would seem to support that.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Keep in mind you the pre out from the 100t is post-power amp, so you get the power-amp tube-breakup tone. That, and you can run it without a speaker load. The 100t is very versatile!

No. The D.I. XLR connector is post power tubes if its switch is in 'post' position. The pre out is a TRS 1/4" connector, post-master volume, but has nothing to do with the power amp. It couldn't. Otherwise it wouldn't be a pre-out. So if you want the power tube mojo, you'd take the XLR D.I. out to your external power amp. If you don't want that, you'd use the 1/4" pre out.
 
Ok, I called Fender. For a 5.3 cab, I can run it at 4 or 8 ohms. I guess 5.3 is close enough to 4 as to not cause problems. I wonder how tone would be affected, if at all?

I've also gotten some dubious info from Fender. I'll just say you're gonna cause undo wear on your power tubes if you run it at 4 ohms.
