Fender Blacktop Club

coped a black top j bass at a pawn shop. $220.00!! snatched it., the pickups a bit noisy but the tone, man. can be in beast mode and blues mode with a few adjustments.

I'm not claiming to know anything about anything, but it's interesting that my BTJ has a Fender logo with the silver-fileld Fender and your's appears to be empty.

Hi guys,..
Does anyone look at the bottom of pickups?
Yesterday I pull the bridge pickup and I saw a label at the bottom that says "G&B pickups"
Is it stock on blacktops?
Which model, the Jazz or the Precision?

I'm rather curious, too. The original specs sheet for the Jazz called them "Blacktop Split-Coil Pickups", but I can't help wonder if they're simply MIM Standard splits or if they were truly their own creature.

Can I join the cool kid club too? After years of waiting for the right BT to show up, I purchased this beauty a few days ago from a local bass player in Moscow, Russia. The bass is in an excellent, almost new condition, and am loving it to death!

I never was a big fan of white finish, but I have to admit this one looks pretty nice. The original White Chrome Pearl aged to a kinda greenish pearl which looks simply awesome together with the rosewood fretboard. Sorry for the poor mobile photos; I‘ll try to capture the colour in a better light.

I was really surprised at how easy this bass is to play. The neck is great and I like the gloss finish. The fretwork on this particular bass is stellar.

All I needed to do were to strung it up with Fender flats, and a few small adjustments to get a low action with no fret buzz anywhere on the neck. Intonation is pretty good everywhere on the neck. It holds standard tune well, and that high mass bridge looks Badass

But the best is: The tone of this bad girl is UNREAL

Seriously, the Blacktop Precision is the most aggressive sounding passive bass I ever plaid. Downright rude with a very nasty attitude. Perfect for the heavier rock I am used to play.

I play only passive basses - and this bass is all I ever need for the heavy stuff.

Sooooo...it’s a White(finished) Black(top) Russian? :D

Seriously though, congrats on your awesome acquisition! I, for one, am glad to hear it’s such a good fit for you on all fronts...looks, feel and sound.

Hello!

May I please join the club too? :D I picked up a new Blacktop Jazz a while back and have been in love ever since.

My previous bass was an active model but I feel much more in control with a wider range of tones available with her. The neck melts within my hand, the glossy finish is silky smooth, and is very comfortable to sit or stand with.

She was sitting around in the warehouse/shop since 2011 before purchase, and as observed by 19sixty3, has gained a slight pale green sheen to it.

The general fit and finish is overall excellent. There are small toolmarks where the frets and neck join , and the strings are not 100% dead centre within the pickup coils but that is about it for imperfections.

She sounds like a bulkier Jazz bass and more twangier P. Even both pickups soloed sound great.

I concur with the pots being a bit tempermental, but their on/off nature has been worked around by tweaking the amp settings a bit.

Hello,

Happy to be here :)

I just got my own Fender Blacktop Precision Bass. It is my first bass guitar from Fender and it is a dream come true for me. I don’t know what year it was made. Thank you if anyone could tell me.

Now, I am looking to upgrade the hardware. I intend to have a local luthier adjust the neck to accommodate GHS BEAD medium gauge strings (65-130) and tune it down to A Standard tuning.

Soon, I would like to replace its stock pickups but there are not many manufaturers that make those kinds or shape of pickups. Does anyone know any pickups that can be a replacement?

I pulled mine out for a drop tuned bass for a couple rehearsals recently. I don't remember if I ever posted pics, but I painted the J headstock gloss black/cc no emblem, left the back of hs clean with the serial#. Had it active for a while, but have a blade Ibanez in the neck and I think maybe a stock pup bridge and passive, with a black Hipshot bridge. Nice playing and sounding bass, I find the neck sorta tiny tho. As I posted before, I found it NOS along with another J and a P of each colour still in boxes JUST before I switched full time to bass, so like 2014 or so. Shoulda bought at least one of the P's.
