Fender Custom Shop Club

I guess I don’t understand the draw of this bass. You could spec a new build better than this bass for much less than the import from the EU. You would only need to wait 4-6 months, but could save 15-20% or more.

I’m just in the process of figuring out if this is something of interest. I would certainly not pay the asking price. First and foremost I’m trying to evaluate if this is a legit bass.

I spent some time looking at vintage instruments, but ended up with another FCS. I am very excited to play this one. Sounds better than she looks and I like the way she looks.

I took a few photos today after I did a setup. Plays even better...

Hi all, made the mistake of picking up a fender CS 64 p bass in Aztec gold/tort at my local music store. Had the usual hefty price tag on it and from the surface I was like ‘I don’t get it? Looks like any other p but with relicing’ Then I sat down and played it.. oh boy.. that tone so smooth and buttery, normally for a band recording I run my Ibanez ATK through logic and then modify it to sound like a 59, but there it was warm and soulful. And that’s when I realised I was only playing through a low end combo amp lol.. The only downside was the neck, which I found to be super beefy, but within about 5-10 minutes I got used to it anyway.. but damn that tone.. now I’m seriously considering dropping the scratch on this or another CS P

You’ve been infected by the Fender Custom Shop bug. It’s now in your bloodstream and you can’t get it out.

Question out to the group. I have been under the impression that the Fender Custom Shop stamped the custom shop logo in the back of the headstock during 1995 to around 1999-2000. Is this correct? I'm mainly doing research on a bass from 1998 that has a Fender Custom Shop sticker on the back of the heastock instead of the stamped version. It was a custom order. Can anyone help me clarify this?

The bass I'm questioning from 1998 has a logo like this.

Here are a few picture of the neck heel.

The replacement COA says it is a 60's Jazz Bass and has the same serial number on the COA which corresponds to the serial on the neck plate. "R" for Relic.

The issue I'm having is that the Fender Custom Shop logo during the Cunetto Years was stamped into the back of the headstock so not to be confused with a real bass from the 60's. Also, if the neck is from a Relic from that time, it should have the ink stamp RELIC on the neck heel as well as mine does from 1997.

Thoughts? I may as well share the link as I think I've talked myself out of the bass anyway. Maybe someone else who knows this bass or the seller could chime in.

Hi, here a demo of the Sean Hurley PBass 61, awesome tone (2min10 for the sound)

Bruno got a hipster look these days
Love this guy!
What strings has he got on the bass? They look like TI JF344 but the instrument’s tone is quite dark, similar to that I was getting from a set of Pyramid Gold strings ...

It's the stock strings, Labella 43 104, very smooth

I would stay away from steel wool because, no matter how careful you are, the steel dust gets on the pickups and is impossible to get off. Instead, I've used pads from the hardware store that are for sanding (very fine) and are similar to Scotchbrite, which might also work. I've used the fine ones to remove the sticky (in humid weather) Nitro gloss. After awhile, from use, the gloss returns if you don't want to change the look. To get the above, just do a little more work.

I have the scotch brite pads- grey and white. I’ve taken the shine of the nitro on a couple of other Basses. But, as described, it returns pretty quickly. So, just keep going until I reach the wood? Is there anything the needs to applied once the nitro or poly is gone?
