That bass calls to me for some reason.

Here's a previous TB thread from 2007 on this model (not sure if it is referring to this exact bass or how many of these were made). Cliff Williams from AC/DC had this model but his had inlays in the fretboard and his looks to be a dark blue and not black.

This is my CS ‘59 reissue I bought new in 2008. Strung with old TI flats and replaced the stock pickup with a Fralin I like better. Been a great bass, sounds wonderful and super easy to play.

I am working up some specs for a CS Precision ... 63 P Bass, alder body, CAR finish, mint guard, maple neck with rosewood fretboard, Journeyman relic. I would like to keep the weight without covers under 9 lbs. The dealer I am working with suggested that I have the CS sort the body for light wood (small upcharge). If I do that, then I wonder about the risk for neck dive.

I imagine that no matter what I would choose, the weight is still going to be quite variable.

What has been your all's experience?

I didn't order it myself, but bought it from a dealer. My CS '60 Jazz Stack Knob was spec'ed with the body blank sorted for light weight. It's in the low 9lbs range. Worn with a strap it balances well, not prone to neck dive. If you're still worried, how fussy are you about having vintage-correct tuning machines? If you're flexible on this you could go with the more modern tuning machines and significantly reduce the weight at the headstock.

I can’t recall the weight of my previous FCS Basses, but the P bass I have now is about 8.5 pounds and was not sorted for light weight….I got it new from a dealer in a trace so I didn’t choose any options….no neck dive issues whatsoever..balances rather nicely..the bass has a big ol’ ‘60s P headstock, so maybe that helps…

Yeah I would not worry about neck dive, they balance well.

I don't think there would be worries about neck dive in your weight range. I have a Fender CS P and 2 other vintage reissue P basses, all in the 7.9 to 8.2 lb range with no neck dive issues at all.

Picked up a new CS 57 Precision, journeyman relic in aged white blonde about a month ago. Slapped some Deep Talkin flats on it. Gigged about six times with it. i think it's a keeper. One of these days I'd better take a picture of it.

So I took off the pickup and bridge covers and switched out the tort pickguard on my '63 Heavy Relic P with a reliced aged white pickguard and I have to say I'm really digging the look. All of my other 3rd gen style P's have tort guards (with the exception of my '59 which has a gold anodized pickguard), so this combination (color/pickguard) is a bit unique, IMO.
