My Cunetto / Fender Custom Shop Relic Jazz just took a peek at your NEW "Sensible Relic" and began to Vibrate uncontrollably in its stand seeing another Cousin WITH PUP Covers. Bassilicious indeed.
57 P got here yesterday and all I can say is WOW! First thing I noticed was the distribution of the weight on this instrument, not the lightest at around 8.5 pounds, but this bass is very nicely balanced. The neck is HUUUGE. The neck is very thick front to back with a soft V profile. The nut width is 1.75”. You won’t believe me, but this is a very fast neck. With my large hands, I get around the neck very easily and I appreciate how “roomy” the neck is. The hand wound 57 pickup is great with the flats on the bass, very open and woody sounding with a nice and very solid sound. I really like the 9.5” radius, it makes bending and chords really easy to do.
With the strap and buckle laying on whatever it is you’ve got under the bass, at first glance it looked like it blew your pants off

One thing I'm not sure about on my new '60 Custom Shop is the headstock decal. At certain angles in the right light, it looks like it's almost above the finish. I believe there is a thin coat of nitro over it, but it almost looks like I slap it on myself. What gives? Is that how they were back in the early 60's and Fender is replicating that in the Custom Shop version or is the finish on mine defective? First 3 pics are showing the how the logo decal looks slapped on in certain light. The last pic is one of the logo at an angle where it looks closer to normal (although you can still see the clear part of thr decal a bit).
Yep, back in the day logos were applied over the finish, yours is too.

Hey guys. I got my custom ordered - customs shop bass last week. I had ordered it over a year ago. Before I post pics of it, I am trying to work out a few issues with Sweetwater and Fender regarding some mistakes and QC issues. One of the issues is that it is supposed to be a 1960 base model with a 13-hole pick guard route, but for some reason they routed it and drilled it for a 10-hole guard. This is an issues because I had already ordered a 13-hole Spitfire guard for the bass, and also it's odd to have a 10-hole route/drilling on a 1960 bass. Essentially, Fender offered to re-make the bass for me with the proper 13-hole routing/drilling, but I have opted to keep the bass as-is because if I order a new bass my SW rep said it will take about 18 more months of waiting to get the new guitar and I'd rather just keep the one have. I am ordering a 10-hole guard and SW is going to reimburse me for that.
Another issue is that the nut is really poorly cut and the D string is practically touching the 1st fret and rattles on it. SW has offered to reimburse me for getting a new nut cut at a local luthier.
Ok, final CQ issue. And I need some community input on this one. I'll post pics below. There are a bunch of little tooling marks/gouges running up and down the fret board on either side of the fret wires. It's really hard to photograph these, but they are deff noticeable in person.(The gouges are on the edges of the rosewood board near the fret wires) What manufacturing operation would have caused these gouges? Is this normal? Is this ACCEPTABLE? How did this pass Fender and SW quality control before being shipped to me? Am I overreacting? I have already decided to keep the bass because overall the bass plays and sounds great and it looks cool. I'm just disappointed with the CQ issues that I am encountering. I own 4 Pre-CBS Fenders and this is my first new Fender. I really wanted to be a champion of modern Fender and their ability to match the craftsmanship of the early 1960s. But I'm a little disillusioned. The good news is that the bass sounds, plays (despite current nut issues) and looks great (despite close up of neck gouges), but they just are not 100% in their manufacturing of this. Other than the little gouges the nut and PG issues are resolvable and It will ultimately be a great bass. I have been playing it A LOT the past week and I know that at its core it is a great bass.
SW has been great to work with regarding these issues and I'm still in talks with them about how to resolve them.

Did you give the bass a full factory set up? The nut may be rattling because the truss rod isn’t set right. Sounds like poor QC from Fender and really great customer service from Sweetwater.
The marks on the fretboard are from the fret file used to finish the fret ends....I have made such marks myself and have seen a local boutique bass repair person leave the same marks.
Your call if that is acceptable or not......But there are no guarantees if you get it remedied
I am disappointed if I mark the fret board ...and it is expected that a professional would not. But it happens
I thought maybe it was from the file used for the fret ends but it just seems like really sloppy work if that's the case to leave such deep grooves. Ultimately I'm going to keep the bass, but I expected more from the CS.
It's definitely how the nut is cut and not a truss rod issue. But I'll get another opinion when I bring it in to have it looked at.
It looks like the fingerboard wasn't taped when the fret ends were filed.

Thought about that. Possibly a bit, but I feel like they are deep enough that I'd have to sand the edge of the board more than would make me comfortable. As they are they don't impact the feel or playability of the board, it's just a cosmetic thing.
