I am on the hunt for a Custom Shop P, and I would really like the heavy relic look. But they are hard to find. How quickly does the Journeymen or Closet Finish basses wear? I know there nitro, but does the new nitro really age like the old stuff?

The nitro does age like the old stuff, but that's to say it takes a fairly high rate of use & time. You will not be able to turn a closet classic into a heavy relic in five years with natural wear & tear, even if you're playing six hours a day.
I have a few "relic"-level jazzes from 2013 that get several hours of play a week and are just starting to get the hints of some arm & finger wear beyond the factory aging. Some of the hardware shows a little more rust/age from years in the Houston humidity.
Thats what I was afraid of. While I game for putting in the work for the wear, I have a 6 basses I cycle thru. So at the rate you experienced it would take over 5 years to even see some light wear. I guess I will keep on the search for a heavy relic P.
There’s a few in the standard “Relic” condition floating around...a few in cool, rare colors too...I’ve always liked the “Relic” level...well worn without losing too much paint...
Do you search used or new? Also, what specs/colors?
If you want a new instrument and don't mind waiting some months, may I suggest placing a custom order?
It’s definitely a test of patience if you go the used route, or waiting for your new build to be completed from the Custom Shop. Just keep an eye on the usual spots and with any luck you will find the one that you want. I got lucky with the one in my avatar but it has induced serious GAS pains for a stack knob Jazz. Your avatar is a color combo I have been looking for the last year. It’s a great combo. Did you custom order that one.
I like the relic standard, but I’d really like a postmodern relic if that’s possible.
New, used or it doesn’t matter..?...I’ve never seen or heard of Fender doing anything but NOS and Joirneyman models for the Postmoderns, but I’m sure they’d Relic it for you in a custom order...if you haven’t played a ‘62-‘64 FCS RI P I’d encourage you to check one out and see if the neck is a deal breaker....I thought it would be , but I’m actually very comfortable with it and my hands are very average sized...

I actually custom ordered it, but after passing through another buyer/seller it ended up with @tat2clod .
I liked the original combo so much that I ordered a PBass Pro in the same finishes and sold the Postmodern bass. The charcoal frost/tort/RW board combo is very nice.
You maybe mean the "Journeyman Relic"? That has become my favorite, as well. Just a bit of tasteful aging, but still looks well taken care of for the "age".
I haven’t played one yet, but I play a 93 music man stingray. From what I’m told they are similar.

Yeah I’m an MTDaholic. I like the postmodern because of the J neck and big modern bridge and the 63 pickups.
I guess I will keep on my search.
My reliced CS hasn’t had any addtional aging in the last year. My AVRI has barely any wear on it and I have been gigging it and playing it daily. The neck has gotten a bit darker and that’s about it.
I'm impressed that the quality of the new nitro doesn't age. I guess they added some new magic to the nitro.

A year ago I picked up the ball as it looked like it had been a while since Member # had been handed out.
