Fender Decals On Non-Fender Basses

Second. Greatest. Thread. Ever. We've got counterfeiters, people who support counterfeiters (raises hand, smiles), people who don't want to be known as "Squier players", Eagle Scouts in training wagging their cyberfingers at anyone who dares suggest that this really isn't worth so much emotion and "Poseur" namecalling, people who probably want to sell a fake Fender to an unsuspecting buyer, people who spent enough money that they want their basses to remain (as) exclusive (as Fenders happen to be at the given moment) even from the second row, and hundreds of lurkers entertaining themselves over one company's status in the marketing world.

All we need now is Jerry Springer... "Stay tuned- when he finds out that his bass isn't a Fender, but just a Suhr with a Fender decal... what on Earth will he do?"...

You can get them on ebay.

But I am confused by this. I am a huge, huge, John Mayer fan and I have been thinking about getting a replica "the black one" relic strat. Id be prolly buying it off ebay from someone who did a good replica job, as the actual fender replica cost 7k at the least and theres only 83 of them. So the market price is even great right now.

Now to make this replica, Itd cost alot because theres a lot of time put into these guys doing the work. Id be buying the body and neck from someone on ebay, and then getting the parts for everything else myself. If I bought from someone who used actual fender neck or body, itd cost a chunk of change, vs getting something that is a cheaper strat copy body

Now when all is said and done and I want to complete MY guitar with a fender logo, preferably by having someone brand it on kus decals are lame...though I should get a decal because it saves money. Why couldnt I do this if Ill be using this guitar....for my own personal use. Never to sell it as some legit fender, and if I was ever hard up for cash, Id sell it as the copy it is...just like dudes on ebay will say what they make is a replica.

And plus its a nice and cost effective tribute to a fave artist of mine.

Of course you "can". Whether or not you should is what is being debated here. The bottom line is you want an instrument that you aren't willing and/or able to pay the asking price for. For most people in this situation, they are left with a few obvious options:
- wait and save up for what you want (old-school approach)
- buy used and save $ (smart-school approach)
- accept that you can't have it right now (uber old-school approach!) What a concept, right? "I live in the western industrialized world and I wan't it now!!!!!" ;)

For the others (in the minority), they might find other ways to get what they want such as:
- purchase or build something similar, but not exact (no Fender logo)
- be willing to buy a pirated decal (thereby directly supporting the counterfeiter)
- make your own decal (but don't distribute it)
- steal one

(The following is not directed specifically at you KayXero):

I do have to wonder if all of the well intentioned folks that promise never to misrepresent their faked 'Fender' are seeing things from a different perspective. From where I'm sitting, if I knew someone was buying counterfeit decals with no moral reservation- I'd be disinclined to extend them 100% of my trust. Know what I mean? "Oh yeah! I have no problem buying this stolen property, but I'd NEVER try to pass it off to someone else...." Makes me a little uneasy, personally.

This is not a troll thread at all. But I guess the question does hurt some of those posers with fake Fenders

Originally, I gave you benefit of the doubt, thinking that you genuinely wanted to hear different the situations, reasons and story's behind why people may put a Fender decal on to understand better. Maybe you were looking at buying one with a fake decal, maybe you found one you really liked and was debating whether or not to do so yourself, who knows.

But, your second sentence proves you have a preconceived opinion of the people and their reasons, and your minimal participation and name calling shows you aren't interested in the answers because you believe you already know them all.

So basically, yeah, I think you just posted this thread to stir up crap on a topic that has already been done to death, and as Scotch said, was covered completely already. Posting a thread to just to start drama pretty much defines a troll thread, unless I have that definition wrong.

I'll agree with you on this, Auria' - that these threads seem pointless in changing anyones mind. I need to stop feeding it myself.

I asked the original question because I really wanted to know. And I got many answers. And no matter what you may think of me, it is not me calling any one a poser. Many in this very thread have admitted it themselves that they are indeed posers. And proud of it. What other reason would they so eloquently defend their stance on striking various poses as they play their fake Fender bass looking for acceptance from not just the bass players in the audience but people who wouldn't know what a Fender bass was even if Leo explained it?

Again you have issues with me calling these proud posers posers and yet some of them themselves explained throughout this thread that they are posers and why they are.

Don't get an attitude with me. Take it up with the Fender decal. That's who's breeding these self admitted posers(as well as the posers in the closet).

This!

Actually, that's why I challenge all the points SMCD makes. He calls them facts, I don't agree.

He really believes his Fenders are not Squires.....

a 3 dressed up as a 9 so to speak.....

In one sense, we have ourselves to blame. Debased is 100% right. And it's not just an issue of the instrument's tradition (whatever tradition can be gained in less than a century, anyhow ) handcuffing real luthiers- it's also the DIY "learning" mentality that apparently comes with electric string instruments. People don't learn to play the bass- they learn to play their favorite styles of songs and stop there. "Good enough" is how we got pickups that hum when one is favored over another, and how we accepted that hum as necessary because some ducktailed clown had hum before rock sounded good.

Yo-Yo Ma at a hoedown, basically.

Then again, since I am putting so much work into making my replica relic. I would rather have "Kay Stratocaster by *insert body relicers tag*"....seems alot more legit to me.

Because it is made by me and for me. I was just giving a hypothetical situation with my original post. My point is that I understand if someone wants to do that. As long as they dont seek to rip anyone off

However, I think its silly really to give Fender credit when they did not assemble your instrument. Even if all the parts are fender, why not give yourself credit and put "by Fender" under it if they didnt build it.

The misrepresenting and the shame in having a non Fender that some people have astounds me.

Sure I love the p bass/strat shape, and sure I love the fender headstock shape above all others. But thats an aesthetic thing, and even with all their shapes, I wouldnt slap their name on it if they had no hand in the creation of my instrument.

Hell I would go as far as saying that if I had a Fender neck on a bass where everything else was non Fender, I would some how etch my name (or whoever helped build it) next to Fender, that way I accurately give representation to those involved in creation.

I have a highway one (pre-spaghetti logo) that i had relic'ed (spelling). My tech beat the snot out of the finish, aged the hardware, we put in a fralin, put on an illegitimate spaghetti decal, and now i have my desert island "60's" p bass. My conscience is clean :bassist:

Shame on you anyhow! I put a Fender 70s Jazz Bass logo on a Fender Jaguar neck. Shame on me, too :D

I paypaled the countefeiter and received two high-quality counterfeit decals in less than a week. If I ever take it off the Geddy Lee body it's on now and sell it, I'll be sure to disclose that it's really a Jaguar neck, not a Jazz. Probably offer a link to my counterfeiter so that the ebuyer can get a counterfeit Jaguar decal if s/he wants one.

threads like this one—even if they are "an interesting topic"—are ultimately useless and inane.

they just serve to get people pissed off and angry with each other.
ya, i know, free speech, i have a right to my own opinion, yadda yadda.

in the end, everyone wastes a TON of their time, that they'll never get back, they won't be any more right or wrong than when they began, nobody's minds will have been changed, AND (here's the kicker) their time and expertise could have been spent helping someone else in another post who really needs their help. that's one of the best things about TB.

over and out. :bassist:

I suppose there are many reasons why,I once had all Fender parts everything right down to the knob and so I put one on but it looked cheesy andI didnt really need to(it came out crappy) but to do do it on a non Fender guitar is odd but hey this is still the good ol USA as long as when you sell it you come clean its OK
