On a more "metaphysical" level, we are in teh DisInformation age. Y'all say 95% of the stuff on the web is a waste of time, well, I might posit that 75% of the stuff out here is bullshirt. Opinion passed off as news, photoshopped pics, etc.

Maybe its my age showing through, but man, it seems that the world in general gets less real by the minute. The "real deal" is so hard to find when its buried under the deal dough. And the 'information age' has made mountains out of the deal dough.

So our task, as low enders and paladins of all that is real, is to hold the line man.

I'm getting a kick out of the folks who swear they will make a full disclosure when they sell the instrument. I don't know why exactly, but I highly doubt this. The opportunity to make a couple hundred more dollars never once crosses the mind of the seller? Never?

If you claim that you would make full disclosure at the point of sale (and therefore allegedly not violating any trademark infringement...), why not make full disclosure from the beginning, so everyone can see?

Why not just design a personal logo & use that? As I mentioned previously, why not put numbers on the sides & top of your car (along with rear spoiler, etc.) to make it appear to be a race car? Why not buy a cheap watch at the kiosk at the mall & install your own crown logo? Why not wear a toupee to cover baldness?

I believe that people will make full disclosure. If for no other reason then due to the fact that they'd probably be found out anyway and have to deal w the repercussions. I think the fender sticker still however makes a bass more sellable, and would probably command a few more bucks. Especially to a kid who realy wants the real thing but can no way afford it. At 15 I did a pretty sweet job of painting gibson on the headstock of an sg clone I found in the garbage and nursed back to health. That was when computers took up entire floors of office buildings. Damn... and I've got probably more technology and memory in the three inch phone I'm typing this from now.

While on the topic of authenticity & all, is there such a thing as "gray market basses", where the seller sells a genuine item at significant discount?

For expensive watches, you can get close to $1000 off MSRP for gray market watches, however, the serial numbers are typically removed, and the seller offers their own warranty, not the original factory warranty. It also exists for camera gear as well.

Is this true for basses? (I'm just curious - not interested in purchasing any).

Totally! And it's legit.

There's a store here in Nashville (Simon Ripley's on 8th ave) that sells Squier factory seconds and quality control rejects that have been repaired professionally. The ser #'s are modified accordingly and the prices are dirt cheap! They have a couple other brands as well...

Finally! Information that is new and useful! I had no idea there were dealers for such instruments. Actually, I had wondered what happened to QC rejects from any and all makers...something happens to them, even if it is off to the furnace.
