Fender Decals On Non-Fender Basses

I have a Squire Vintage Modified Fretless that a master luthier from the custom shop was nice enough to modify a 25 year old squire neck that is unreal. It's now better than most Fender Fretless basses and is technically made by Fender I would never consider putting a Fender decal on the headstock. I've had a couple of world class players play it an love it, but it still wears it's Squire headstock decal. I've seen guys put Fender Logos on Nash basses. Makes no sense morally or ethically to me

Let's be clear, the words "moral" and "heinous crime" are yours, not mine. If someone wants to throw a counterfeit label on a non-Fender guitar, hey, whatever floats your boat. And the whole "I'll make sure the buyer knows when I sell it" line is ludicrous. Yah, you'll do that. And what will the 3rd or 4th guy who owns that bass do?? But you don't care, because it's out of your hands at that point.



What's ironic is that I'm not even that big a fan of Fender. But Fender's reputation and well being isn't the issue here. It's people performing verbal acrobatics trying to dodge being labeled a "cheeseball". Sorry guys, it ain't working.

You're not even addressing my post, and I have become one of 'you people'. How charming.

I'm proud of Fender's instruments and legacy as well, which is exactly why I would want to put the correct era Fender decal on a replacement neck, for my personal use. I'd never sell it on with the decal present.

For the benefit of those blinded by sanctimony and inflamed by the charge of their high horse, this would be neither illegal or immoral, though I'm sure you can still work up a frothy rage to oppose such a nefarious and deceptive ruse.

I thought I was out of this, but I guess not. I buy unauthorized decals. Guilty! I put them on parts basses. Guilty. I then sell these at a lost. Guilty. I try to pass these off as Fenders. NOT guilty. I recently sold the bass above. Do you think the person who bought it thought he was getting a Fender? Will the person who buys it 15 years from now think he/she is getting a Fender? Fender should be so lucky.

You made a beautiful axe! Why not be proud and put Your Name on it. That's what i'll have my Luthier do when he replicates my stolen 70's P. I've already asked him to start thinking about a signature for the headstock! Merry Christmas to all you Low End Players! Hope Santa is good to you all.

I do try to keep an open mind, and you've since tried to make your POV clearer. Besides, anyone that has modded their Fender that much can't be against fake decals out of Fender worship or snobbery. I'm not judging other guys, and I dont think there is a blanket reason people do it. But, you guys have convinced me, that for me and my bass, it is cheesy and takes away from my bass. It was a bad decision on my part, and I admit it.
And no, I no longer think you are a troll, or were being trollish by posting this thread. Peace.

My situation exactly. A few years ago when Warmoth offered the Antigua finish, a light went off in my head. It took me a few years to get it all together, but my dream build is almost complete, and it's gone through a bunch of changes, but currently it involves:
Warmoth mahogany Jazz body and pickguard in Antigua
Allparts pearloid blocked maple neck
real 1978 Jazz pickups
Hipshot vintage bridge
Real Mexi Fender tuners
Real "F" neck plate

What would Fender charge me to build it for me... five grand?
Since the body and neck are Fender licensed parts, I have no problem at all in having a Fender Jazz 70's logo on the headstock. It basically completes the project. Why should there be any objection at all?
Surely Fender must know people are going to be putting repro Fender logos on the licensed parts.

I consider my bass to be more Fender than some Chinese-outsourced maker having the official Fender logo on theirs, even if it's for Fender.
Man, I can't believe how defensive some of you guys get on this topic.
Obviously if someone is slapping a Fender logo on a non-licensed product, that's a different issue altogether.

Had Fender offered a replacement body in mahogany and Antigua, as well as a replacement neck in pearloid/maple, and these parts were priced competitively, I would have considered that. But they don't. And the fact that they don't offer what I wanted... sorry, I can't make any apologies. But I did go with licensed parts.

The Warmoth logo is stamped on the body, and the Allparts logo is stamped on the neck heel. I'm not conning anybody. It's my project, and I'm perfectly happy with it.

Did I mention... it's MY project?

there are absolutes, simply nothing as banal and low Hz as decals. However as a prior poster put it, ethics and morality are in short supply - indicative of the lack of absoutes at a higher Hz.

Its like sticking a decal on is one Hz, pretty low, pretty banal, BUT when you move to try and decieve using that decal, it takes it up to a much higher Hz, one more cerebral and one MUCH more closly linked to your soul - if you beleive in that sort of thing, frequency resonance of souls/auras...

I can see it cleary at times, so.... either I am gaining orenda in my middle age ( 50), or I'm losing my mind... :bassist:

I put a Chrysler Imperial logo on a speaker I had back in the late '70s
I couldn't find a suitable Norge logo from a washer or dryer. I thought it was funny. I wasn't trying to make anybody think it was a Baldwin Imperial and I didn't feel it was morally wrong.

As far as headstock decals go, because the headstock shape is trademarked, for me, it's an iffy question. I believe that SELLING the decals is wrong.


But they sure look cool..... don't they??

I solved my moral dilemma by having my own made for me..... Fender [like] font but my name.
