Fender Decals On Non-Fender Basses

1. It's a toy, not a bass. Much like a Matchbox is a toy, not an automobile. And the manufacturer got a license from Fender to put their logo there. It's brilliant marketing. Fender is increasing it's brand identity as "the" brand to own. When/if the people who play Rock Band decide to buy a bass, what brand do you think they'll go for? And that brand consciousness will last a lifetime with most people.


2. The vintage market is what it is. And no matter how irrational the logic, it affects the market for everyone - including you and me. Say you were to buy a 68 Jazz Bass for a good price. Say that this bass was the best playing, best sounding Jazz Bass you ever played. Then say you found out a couple years later that it was a forgery. Would you think "I don't care, it's the best sounding Jazz Bass I've played", or would you think "Wow, that sucks", like most people would?

1. Except a matchbox car doesn't have the actual badges from a real car. If someone were to put a Fender decal on a Fender licensed neck, and attached it to a Fender body, they come out on top three times. The sale of the original bass, licensing rights for the neck from the supplier, and free advertising every time someone sees the logo.

2. The vintage market does not effect me because I don't care about vintage instruments. I personally would never spend $10k on any bass, let alone a 42 year old jazz. As per your example though, anyone who would blindly spend vintage prices without checking the validity of the product is a fool.

Now, lets have a look shall we, I will 100% take back EVERYTHING I said. All you have to do is point out where I said anything at all about:

Let see where you got that impression. which of my posts are you referring to???

I said you get stickers with fender products and you can stick them on whatever you like. So you are completely off target here.

Then you said that Fender sells headstock decals. That was false.

Wrong again, I pointed out clearly that Fender headstocks are silk screened. A decal is a sure sign of a fake. I at no time mentioned anything about anyone selling necks with or without a logo.

Im currently building a warmoth(neck is due mid jan.)its a p deluxe 5 butterscotch blond body with s.d.jazz pick ups,a modified 51 pickguard and hipshot cloverleafs on a tele headstock.a bass fender never built.but i was gonna put a nocaster decal in it just to confuse people(really other bass players).i dont intend to ever sell this bass,but my wife might at the estate sale!buyer beware.actually you guys gave me agood idea with the OFENDER comment.i think im gonna go with that!

I'm sure they would, but the can of worms was opened once they put that sticker on.

I guess if more than half of the instrument was Fender, I'd be ok with it. I mean some bands only have 1 original member and still pass it off as the original band.

I will never understand any reason or excuse to do it, but then again I don't know why people put a racing stripe on a junker. It isn't going to make the auto run any faster!

I saw a car with a sticker that had the word "Jesus" inside the outline of a fish. I pulled up next to the car, but there was a fat lady inside, not Jesus.

You proved my point. I can tell the difference between Jesus and a big lady and also the 'poser' fender.

How do you feel about a legit Fender neck being put on a generic body and then that bass being sold as a "generic body with Fender neck"?

Exactly. I'm relatively new here but there are so many basses and options out there for everyone, it should be a non issue. After reading the thread through, it almost seems like baiting from the original poster. It's obviously a contentious issue, or had the potential to be before this thread was made. If I had a quality instrument built to Fender spec, including headstock shape, I most definitely put a Fender decal on it. Why? Because I can.

FWIW, not all Fender logos are silk screened. The old ones aren't and not all their current offerings are either. (Fender CS, AV series are ones I'm personally aware of. I'm sure there are more)

I had a TBer relic a Squier VM Jazz (like Jaco's Jazz) a few years ago and he asked me if I wanted a period correct Fender logo put on. He had one handy, the headstock was already reliced (stock Squier headstocks are very light in colour) and I said sure. If he didn't mention the logo, it would either be blank or have a Squier logo on it today.

I tell EVERYONE that asks me about the bass that it is a relic-ed and Frankenstein-ed $300 Squier. Even in my sig on TB it is a Squier.

I have lots of fairly expensive basses but could really care less what people think of the logo on my bass' headstock. I just bought a Squier Jaguar and will proudly gig the bass with the Squier logo!
