Fender dimension vs jazz bass

seeing as no one else is rushing in to keep your thread visible ... the question that immediately jumps out at me with your two choices, is do you want a passive or active bass? ... with that said, I only visited the Dimension very briefly when they first came out, and unless I am missing something, they are an active only bass, and of no interest to me ... JMHO

Haha thanks for noticing.... I like the jazz but the punch on the dimension is amazing which I think is the active electronics

I myself happen to be a passive Jazz fan. My brother in law has an American Stnd Jazz Deluxe (active) and I can get on my passive American Stnd most if not all of what he can get tone wise. However, I do have Tobias Growler that is active and I do like that too.

Which one do you like beter- that is the one to get.

Was watching the CMA's last week and saw one of the backing musicians playing one of these. Had no idea what I was seeing, only recognizing the Fender headstock. Anyhow, being at a gig & needing a quick visit to a music store, I saw one hanging on the wall (Mexican version) and now I am intrigued. Going to check one out later this week. Would want the 5'er because of the Young Country gig: Invalid Link Removed

The American Standard is indeed passive and comes in a really cool blue color. The review had really nice things to say and I think that one has a five position switch. The American Deluxe I played was indeed really punchy and had one pickup in the sweet spot and lots of headroom as advertised. By all accounts, very underrated. I heard they spent a lot of time in development on this which might explain the various other versions including modern player, MIM Deluxe, American Standard and American Deluxe. Perhaps too much to choose from causing some hesitation although I have seen great demos on Youtube of all of these.

I have owned both; USA STD and USA DLX . Imho the DLX is the one to go. Neck is smaller than the Jazz and stringspacing is about 18mm. It's not like a Jazz it is a sound on its own. On weight and frets I noticed nothing special/better/worse than a Jazz. But I prefer 19mm string spacing and that's the only noticeable playing difference. I think the electronics were very good on the DLX, I see no reason in replacing them. You do not really hear the electronics coming in and pushing the tone as on some other basses.

Definitely the Dimension, because HumBuckers!

You can solo either pickup w/o noise, not so with a Jazz in a noisy environment.
plus, they just have more output than those girly single-coils
