Fender FSR Club

I just bought a MIM ash/tort/rosewood FSR jazz bass at a Guitar Center used department for $400. It was the best sounding/playing of many different basses I tried that day. I have to wait a few weeks to pick it up unfortunately (as per GC policy for stuff just arrived). A few questions for folk that own them...

The one thing I hear most about these is people changing out the vintage style bridge because the saddles have a tendency to slip? I like the Fender bridge so instead of going to the extreme of a third-party high mass bridge, I'll maybe just upgrade saddles and springs?

If I want to change the pickguard, will any jazz bass guard fit comfortably, or does it have the be a MIM one?

Thought about pickup swapping, but from the online shootout videos I don't hear MUCH of a difference between MIM pups and those of the boutique variety (aside from some being louder) so probably not worth it?

How about the tuners/pots/wiring? No major advantage upgrading the MIM stuff there?

The specifications are the same for FSRs and their "Standard" counterparts. There are no technical deviations, if you've got a MIM FSR Jazz Bass, any MIM (Standard) Jazz Bass part will fit. In my personal opinion, there's nothing on a Standard Jazz Bass that need replacing unless it faults. Which it propably won't. The tuners are good, albeit not as goodlooking as vintage reversed tuners or as lighweight as others might be. Don't bother with pots and wires either, they're good. I've replaced the bridge on my MIM Standard Precision for a Gotoh 201, mostly because it's more stable, but that might mot be actually scientific. The Gotoh is fairly cheap though - so get one, they look good ;-) The only thing really worth considering are the pickups. I've put a set of Fender Originals (aka. AVRI '62) on my Squier VM '77 Jazz, made a world of a difference. But don't replace the pickups unless you really need to. Do it if/and/or when you KNOW which ones you want - and why.. My tip is to not bother doing any mods unless you need to. If you don't like how your Jazz Bass sounds or plays, maybe Jazz Basses aren't your ting? The pickguard is another story, and changing it is the easiest way to change the look of your bass. There's plenty to choose from, WD - amongst others - has quite a selection: Invalid Link Removed

Good info, many thanks!

If I may ask the club a question as a non-member.......as has been said, there's not a lot of info (i.e. none) on these FSRs on Fender's site and GC doesn't have any info listed other than the "With our Invalid Link Removed, you can be assured of complete satisfaction and the lowest available price, or your money back!" blurb.

What is the difference between the FSR models and the Standard models (P bass for instance) other than the "Special Run" designation? I saw one P bass in "Platinum" recently. Is it exactly like (specs) the Standard Precision Bass listed on Fender's web site except special ordered/colors for places like GC, etc. or is it a lower quality instrument?

I read the info about parts being compatible between between the "Standard" and FSR. I took that to mean Standard parts could be swapped/purchased for the FSR but that doesn't necessarily mean the parts are identical in quality.

Thank you!

FSR is a subcategory of ordinary production models. They are exactly like their standard counterparts except for the finish (and somtimes body wood), technically they're the same. My American Standard Precision FSR is like any other American Standard (of that year), but has been made in a run of 150 basses with a hand stained ash body. This one was listed on the Fender website for a couple of months. Others are made specifically for big dealers like GC and Thomann, and are only sold by them. These never appear on the Fender site. But if it's an American Special, for instance, it will have the same technical specs as the ones on fender.com.
The thing they all have in common is the fact that they have been made in limited numbers, although those numbers vary from a handful to thousands.

My JB, from Argentina. Hipshot A + Hipshot HB7.

NBD! ....And need a number,.. and some info. :) Purchased new today at Guitar Center...MIM Precision in silver (called Platinum on tag). They've only had one of these in the store, and no more, apparently. I can't find anything on GC's site, or Musician's Friend, etc. As you can see, it has the special sticker, and was produced in 2014. View attachment 621977 View attachment 621981 I did skim over this thread, pardon if I overlooked. ;) Love this color. Looks a lot like Inca Silver. Awesome bass! Anybody own one, or seen one?

I was looking at this model at my local guitar center. Curious if you or anyone else that owns changed the pickguard and if so, to what?

Funny thing is, I never liked basses or guitars of this coulour (white, olympic white, yellow, beige, and so on...). But when I saw this bass on the local ads, I can't let it go like this... I jumped on it. :D

I love it!! Don't know if I'll keep it for a while, but for now I'm an happy new FSR owner! May I have a number, please?? :)

If those are true inlays and a bound neck you would be crazy to let that bass go! I love it!
