My main precision, a 62 reissue from 84 has a slight neck twist, but my tech compensated it by slightly lowering the frets on one side. If he didn't tell me i would not notice... i have a low action on this one and it is the loveliest neck i have played, next to...

The other precision, a 57 reissue from 84. this one has a rock hard neck. it's wearing heavy flats without a problem -> a VERY stable neck. Also a sweet neck to hold. I eventually sold everything else I had, these two get the job done every time, cured my GAS.

To tell the truth the neck on my '83 P is not super stable, but it suits me as I tweak it every gig (it's very dry here at altitude and all my basses need seasonal adjustment anyway).

I have heard of a number of J necks in particular going bad, that's why you sometimes see Fuljerton Js with replacement necks for sale.

I imagine if a neck didn't develop a twist or ramping quite early it won't now.

The '82 Jazz I have now was defretted due to a ski jump - the rosewood was sanded down at the upper register and sealed. At least the neck was salvageable - I think this happens when they are left in the case for years under full string tension and not played.

It happens in part because of the slab rosewood fingerboard and separate maple neck. That explains -- in part -- why the above poster's 57 RI (all maple neck) doesn't have ski jump. Read this for more info:

im not going to speak about 50's basses because i have no experience with them. however i currently have a 62 jazz, a 64 precision with a 64 jazz neck and just recently sold a 64 jazz. all three of those necks felt very similar and the measurements bore that out. my fullerton jazz neck is way different and again, the measurements in regards to neck depth are very different from their pre cbs counterparts. the corona reissues feel much more like an old bass with respect to dimensions.

I have played a number of 60s Fenders and there was variation in the necks. I also just happened to come across this old Dan Smith interview reinforcing my observations:

I've got a'83 '57 Fullerton and while the neck is wide and thin, it seems very stable... but, I play it a lot. I did have to adjust the truss rod once after it was in Norcal for a while.But, now its stable.

BTW, the '82 Fullerton weighs 8lbs., 8 ounces.

Regarding the slight variations on the Fullerton reissues--and the originals--this video graphically demonstrates why that is the case. When viewing how these instruments were made it's actually a wonder that they were able to achieve the consistency that they did.

That's really cool. I saw that a while back. Love seeing that kind of stuff. Thanks for posting that.

Another interesting factoid: the headstock on my '57 reissue is 19/32" thick while the headstock on my 2013 American Standard is 5/8".

Not sure if the thinner headstock on the Fullerton reissue is accurate to the originals or not but it does help negate any neck dive without causing any dead spots on the neck (higher mass on the headstock is supposed to help with dead spots, which is why they sell the Fat Finger and similar devices).

Fascinating how much variation there is in these reissues. Where are you finding the names on the neck? I have a photo I took of my bass' neck heel when it was off, but I only see a date (no name)?

I looked at my pictures, both have the FRR20 (?) stamps, but only one got the J.TORRES stamp. At the right picture are only some pencil marks.
