Fender Jazz Bass 24 experiences?

I searched for any threads on these, but didn't find any.

Anybody own/play/played one of the new Fender JB's with the seymour-duncan pups and the 24-fret neck? I might have to replace one of my axes sometime soon, and my primary beef with Fenders has always been that they (usually) come with 20 or 21-fret necks, but I'm thinking this one looks solid, between the Duncans and 24 frets.

Thoughts? Anyone want to shed some light for an Ibanez fanboi? :p

The Jazz 24 is a fine instrument. It is made my Cort in Korea for Fender....they make some of the best instruments in Asia.

The one I had, I converted to a fretless bass. And it sounded great. Very punch and tight low end. A very well made bass. But from what I read, the preamp is either you love it or hate it kinda of a thing to people. I liked it.....

One thing to watch for, quilted maple top is just a very thin veneer. Some are more figured then others. The first Jazz 24 I bought (on-line) had a horrible looking top and I returned it. The second one a bought a year later, I had the sales guy at Sweetwater.com email a photo of the bass before I bought it. So I ended up with a good looking model.

Nice, I was thinking to get it in flat black anyway, I like that look better than the quilt tops.

Did yours have a lot more growl to it, with the seymour-duncans, or did it sound more like a traditional j-bass?

I'd definitely say mine growls, and until I tried the 24, I've never cared for Active Fenders in general. I love the 24 and it's very, very easy to hold and play. I haven't compared with a scale, but it certainly feels a lot lighter than my MIA J. I bought it as a backup to that bass, but I'm finding myself using it more and more.

I've had one since the year it first came out (2005?). One big bang for the buck! When I first got the axe, friends thought it was one of the US-made ones. When I told them that they were made in Korea by Cort they couldn't believe it. The only major mod I've done is change the watered-down SD preamp with an Audere and jumped the juice to 18 volts (retro-fitted a flip-top battery case in the cavity cover). Nothing wrong with the stock preamp - I just liked the sound of the Audere in another axe and I just had to have it. The other thing I like about the 24 fretter is that it had a dinky-sized body. Nothing wrong with the standard sized Jazz Bass body, but the smaller 24-fretter body just fit in with my ever expanding gut. :atoz:

The thing with the 24 frets, the smaller body, and the wider spacing between the neck and bridge pickup is that you have a smaller traditional slap area between the neck pickup and the edge of the neck. Not a deal breaker if you ask me - I just got used to it.

For all intents and purposes, I think it sounds closer to a modern-sounding Fender than a vintage one just as ClassicJazz observed. But with the right set of strings and messing around with the preamp, you could get a good facsimile of that vintage sound.

I've had mine since 2005 and think it's great value. It has more sounds than I can use and it feels great even on extended sessions. I don't think anyone would have a problem using this as their main axe.

Most of all, I love the bottom end I can get from the neck PUP.

Cons ?

The bass pot is a bit scratchy other than if I have a brand new battery fitted and I can't get the truss rod just right - always just a little bit of buzz reound about the middle of the neck.

I noticed that the 5 string version has a passive / active selection available and wondered if that had anything to do with pre-amp reliability. Some reviews have mentioned this.

In fact, there are several reviews here on TB and most of them are positive although one guy thinks they suck - doesn't say why though.

Ska .. if you want to find some threads about the Jazz 24 from last year type J24 into the search field. Theres a thread by me and some other guys. I just got an 08 that I love but Im keeping the J24 , also mines a 4 string with an active/passive push /pull knob on the main volume. That option isnt just for 5 strings. Also I havent seen the burst in stores lately.. just the cherry option.
