Fender Jazz Bass! Only $32,500!

I used to own and play a vintage 60s bass for 30 years then I discoverd the newer ones played and sounded better ...

The only reason to buy one of those basses is to have it as an investment ...

When it comes to playing I prefer a newer and more reasonably priced bass ...

That is my opinion.

That wouldn't surprise me at all. He was trying to flog an early Jazz a while ago which he described as 100% original.

When someone pointed out that the bridge was wrong for that year, which it was, his response went something along the lines of "I've got the bass in my hand and I can see that it is correct. only an idiot would think that it isn't".

That's positively diplomatic for him, judging by his normal aggressive and insulting attitude.

Maybe He's just made a mistake with the finger rest screw :D

So you pay $32500 for it and then what? Indications are not good that values will increase, with home prices going down. I suspect you'd have something that you bought at the top of the market that would never again be worth as much.

Of course, this is all academic, since it hasn't (and likely won't) sell at that price.

I agree with your expectation that prices for vintage basses should drop in the near future due to weakness in the economy, dropping home prices, etc. But never again? Not unless you think we're going to drop into a depression for, well, forever. I'd bet that this bass will fetch a higher price in 10 or 20 years, especially since really clean examples will be even more scarce.

Having said that, (A) there's no way I'd buy it, since I'm not a collector and (B) I would never deal with this particular seller.

Well, I wasn't trying to predict the future. I'd just like to point out that this is not the time to be paying large bucks for niche products. You'd be better to put that $32500 you've got in your jeans in something a little more reliable (i.e., something with real intrinsic value) as an investment.

There's no way any of us know which way the economy will turn, but putting that kind of money on an item in an uncertain market is the opposite of what I call "investing."

To be fair, your previous post did seem to make a prediction. But I would agree that anyone expecting a certain minimum return on this bass over a given period would be approaching it the wrong way. Hopefully, anyone buying this would already be a millionaire and wouldn't be counting on it to help with their retirement.

I can't afford stuff like this nor would I buy anything from him, but his prices are right inline with all the other vintage dealers, even if they are astronomical. I think all vintage dealers are loons, but he is absolutely right about challenging anyone to go out and find excellent examples for dirt cheap...probably ain't gonna happen.
There's a dealer here in Seattle with a custom color white 61 stack knob and has a 52k price tag on it. He's been in no hurry to sell it. And the cheapest I saw but was really-really beat, but unmodded/original finished one still low 20k.

So the 61 refin from a last week for 10k doesn't seem all that terrible anymore, eh?

What a schmuck...looks like he himself is only willing to pay $13, 250 for a '61, and $18, 250 for a custom color. Then of course he'll double that.

I wish you worked at Micky D's, then you could spit on his burger.
