What a low life. I never bothered the guy, nor placed an offer. Hell, I didn't even scoff at the bass in this thread - I simply made a slightly humorous reference to The Royal Tennenbaums. Now this guy calls me a loser and posts my face on his listing? Low class, man. Low class.

Bah! I was going to send him a polite but firm message expressing my distaste, but Ebay is having some issues and won't allow my very short message to send. Oh well... it's not like my letter would have changed this guy any.

It's a shame that the anonymity of the internet allows jerks like this to do or say anything they want without recourse.

For complete disclosure: while I MIGHT be able to afford that much $$ for an instrument, I would have a hard time justifying it...

1. With how advanced the fraudulent copies are these days, how can one even demonstrate the authenticity of vintage Fenders anymore?? I'm sure there are a handful of experts, but I've heard stories about vintage amps and transformers that make my hair stand up... Is it unexpected that an item of the rarity should have some type of appraisal documentation?

2. Can he legally use photos of people in an auction without their permission? Are these pix considered public domain? Can a case be made of illegal use of ones image without permission?

It's probably not worth the effort, but Ebay might force him to remove the images for the auction. I doubt it's worth a lawsuit, or even threats of legal action, but some of those he took pictures of seemed pretty upset...

Just my 2 cents....

I'm pretty sure what he did was legal, as lame as it was. He pulled all those pics from Myspace, which is public, so I imagine those pics are considered public domain.

I was pretty upset at first, but beyond reporting it to Ebay there's nothing I can do. He's just yet another jerk on the internet who thinks he is so much better than people he has never met, and I'm not going to be bothered by it.

Besides, insulting people like that says much more about the insulter than the insultee.

I've heard it said that when they do the burst like that (with the belly contour all black), it's to cover up the fact that they are using a better wood 'facing' over a much cheaper wood 'core' (or perhaps even a body made entirely of plywood!). Is this the case on those MIMs with the all-black contour?

All MIM except the Classic series are made from laminated wood. I wouldn´t but a MIM Fender, ever.

I just don't see the appeal of old beat up vintage instruments with weak pickups, weak necks, worn frets, and a finish that is really bad looking ...

Neither do I, but some people do. Instruments we buy today will become vintage one day, too. Just wait 30-40 years on the '08 American Series Fenders, and they might be worth something...
