You almost never see them installed on basses that came with them (unless it's a high dollar auction/sale). I assume most people just took them off and didn't worry about it. They were a goofy system and sound kind of weird anyway. Foam mutes sound better, imho.

I wouldn't buy a thing from that seller, but $32K for a really clean stack knob is the new reality. Compared to how guitarists have it, it seems downright reasonable :eek:

Thank you. I've seen them most of the time without mutes, but didn't know how that worked. I just assumed they were adjustable (could be turned "off" without removing them), but I couldn't see how from the design. I wasn't trolling.

There was a time when the "collector" market was pretty small. Old guitars were "old guitars" and were priced accordingly.

Somewhere in the mid-90s a LOT more people seem to have become interested in playing. With the advent of the intArwebs a LOT more people became interested in collecting. I'm guessing many of these new collectors are people that used to play 20-30-40 years ago, but put it on the back burner while they concentrated on their careers. Now these people have money and a rekindled interest in guitars.

Thing is about pieces like this is that they are few and far between. People with money will pay to have these things- because they can. In 20-30-40 years you just might see completely ridiculous prices on stuff you take for granted now-

I remember seeing a refinned 60 or 61 for $1,700 around 15 years ago- and didn't get it because it was too much back then. Of course, I would have been a genius for buying it at that price now... FWIW, I bought my 65 Jazz for $1000 in 1996, and I overpaid then.

I don't know of or know this seller. He sounds like a piece of work. But if you don't like what he's got, what he's charging or how he conducts himself personally... what does it matter to you?

I shake my head at Ed Roman's rants, I read about all the people he's hosed, but I'm not going to **** with him to prompt him to be a jerk to me.

Nice try, but the "epilepsy" is not so much a result of his prices (which are not unheard of), but his remarkably snide, abrasive attitude and his refusal at times to answer reasonable requests for information. If I was spending that much on something I've never seen in person (not that I personally would), I'd expect the seller to provide every excruciating detail.

Show me a retail salesman who acts like that while trying to sell $30,000-plus items, and I'll show you a guy out of a job by the end of the day.

They finally took the '67 (IIRC--either '67 or '64) Jazz outta the glass case at the Guitar Center near me. They want $4000 for it. I was drooling!!! Then I played it....YUCK!! I realized that I was in love with the look, the history and the lure of the MOJO. This one has the cig marks on the headstock, 40+ years of wear, all that... I now know that I am a modern bass tone kinda guy, thru and thru. I still love that look, just give me modern pups with it :hyper:!!

I see these kinds of posts all the time....
You played a bass that was not setup and probably hasn't been in 20yrs, and probably had ancient string on it, especially if it was from GC. What did you expect?
But FYI, a '67 had block inlays with neck binding, and a '64 would have dot inlays and no binding.

"Epliepsy" is correct. I've seen the "notes" to the seller as sent by some folks here and it's nothing more than e-mail trolling. This guy probably gets dozens of snide e-mail from people who have zero intent of buying his stuff and just want to tell him that his auctions are over-priced in their amateur opinions.

Then they act all offended when he gives them the response they want/deserve. Sorry, folks you've got no leg to stand on.

You don't like his merchandise? Don't buy from him. Think he's a jerk? Why are you e-mailing him? No one's making you click on his auctions.
